1. I don't know. Ronnie Earle was the force behind this, and
I hear he's moved on.

(I 'think' that was his name; Earle rings a bell)

3. Some charges were dropped and the minor ones haven't gone to trial.

4. And probably wont' result in jail time
At this point I suspect he won't see jail time. I'm kinda suspicious that we'll see some sort of deal at some point with him pleading no contest to minor charges and paying some sort of restitution or "court costs". At worst probably a suspended sentence.

6. For Fed charges, forget it! We need a AG first. Holder is useless...
He only goes after pot smokers.

7. He's never actually been tried, just indicted. Some charges dropped.
Earle, the local DA, retired, but that wouldn't make a difference in whether or not he's tried. I live here, and I'm not even sure exactly where his charges stand.

8. This should answer your question
Take DeLay. The former Republican House majority leader was indicted on conspiracy and money laundering charges in 2005, and he resigned from his leadership post. Prosecutors allege that DeLay and two other defendants conspired to launder corporate money during the 2002 elections to guarantee a Republican majority in the Texas House.

DeLay’s attorney, Dick DeGuerin, maintains that his client has been ready to go to trial for quite some time. “It’s taken so long because the DA appealed the ruling of the district judge about the original charges against DeLay not even being a law when the conduct occurred,” DeGuerin said.

In 2008, the state's 3rd Court of Appeals ruled that because the alleged campaign finance violation involved checks as opposed to cash, the charges against DeLay did not apply: The contributions occurred before the Legislature amended the law in 2003 to include checks. But then-Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle appealed the decision to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, which reversed the lower court’s decision. Earle has since retired. Eight years after the investigation began and five years after the charges were filed, a pre-trial hearing has been set for Aug. 24.

10. Does he get a trial first, or
should he go first to jail, then the trial.

The case has been a mess.

At first, he kept demanding his right to a speedy trial and the DA kept getting extensions.

Then the DA retired.

NOw I think he's the one stalling.

Anyway, the biggest charges were dropped.

The few left are more minor.

My guess is the new DA will eventually drop all charges, or there will be some plea deal admitting to a misdemeanor.

Either way, there's no justification for the trial still not having started five years after the case was brought.

It's unfair toi the defendant especially, but also to the people.
