That is where the action will be come November. It will be very exciting if you pick a local horse and ride it to election day. It will be even more exciting if you have a horse in every race. Look closely at the never-ran-before candidates. They're people just like you and me. Approachable. Likely to be in desperate need of money and volunteer help.
Forget the rancorous national politics as you're able. These races are fun and can be very much participatory. Each victory matters a whole lot.

One year I got a birthday postcard from a downballot candidate: picture of candidate with shit-eating grin on his face, holding a sheetcake saying, "Happy Birthday, xxxxxx". It was simultaneously creepy and funny. I realize the constituents' names are photo-shopped in for each postcard but I got this mental image of a stressed-out pastry chef wiping out and redoing names over and over...
