Little Feat drummer Richie Hayward died this morning.
Richie Hayward was one of the best drummers on the planet. He was a friend of mine, as I was on Little Feat's road crew in the '70s.

Richie was very ill lately. He was battling liver cancer, and respiratory problems. He was hospitilized a couple of days ago with pneumonia, and died this morning of Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

RIP Richie!

6. So sad to hear this. I was really hurt when Lowell George died in 1979.
Edited on Thu Aug-12-10 08:48 PM by Hissyspit
Condolences to his family, and say hi to Bill Payne, if you are ever in contact with him, WG.

That first album is so good, and Dixie Chicken is up there, too.

The live album is one of the greatest ever and is coming out in a new edition, CD and vinyl, on Mobile Fidelity.

Liver cancer. How do you fight against that, how do you prevent it? So sad.

19. Frank Zappa?
Edited on Thu Aug-12-10 09:05 PM by Hissyspit
He was with Mothers of Invention for a while if I remember.

ON EDIT: Produced by Zappa. George's band The Factory was on "Gomer Pyle" and "F Troop!"

25. Anybody know Warren Klein, who was, I think, in The Factory?
He played sitar on a record we made in 1987, I've wondered what he's been doing over the last 23 years.

22. I heard he started playing slide when he cut three fingers.
He was working on a model airplane and cut three of his fingers, so he started playing slide to ease the pressure on the fingers. That was going into the first Feat album. Never heard who taught him slide though.

Give it up.

21. Yeah, I was pretty bummed too.
I was in Richmond, VA, setting up for the next show when I got the word that Lowell was found dead at the hotel in DC. I phased out of touring after that. Nothing could have matched touring with the Feat and Lowell. I will see Bill and the band the next time they come through Northern California. I'll give them a shout from DU.:hi:

24. I think so too.
The live show in the '70s was the best thing on the road. All the great musicians showed up to watch. They had heard the rumors.

16. I first saw Little Feat in Atlanta in 72
They were the original four pieces-Lowell George used a 3/4 inch socket wrench to play slide. What a band-What a drummer. May he rest in peace

26. 11/16 craftsman.
I used to find them on stage after shows sometimes. I should have saved a couple. Lowell used to like to steal my bic lighters, so they would have been fair game. :smoke:

38. My next door neighbor was Mike Gibbons---
The drummer for Badfinger...

About 5 years ago he took a nap and had a heart attack and died.

Real tragic.

The dude was in his fifties and led a hard ass life but was a rock and roller to the very end.

RIP Richie.

Probably had a BUNCH to do with Richie, aided and abetted and egged on by Kenny Gradney and Sam Clayton. RIP, Mr. Hayward.

41. I will never forget the day Richie walked into my office
i tried to play it cool but shit inside I was going "You're Richie Hayward!!" He only stayed for a while but I was thrilled. I am sort of jaded except for people I truly admire. Then I am a sappy fan inside.

I love his drumming. I loved his hair. It was the hair that said Richie to me, that made me recognize him.

Later on I had the privilege to record him for a Van Dyke Parks project. I can still see him with the head phones and the hair. Wow! what an in-command drummer.

One thing about those sessions...one time Van Dyke explained what type of piano sound he wanted, the relationship between he and his brother and the Bicardi family all in one English sentence. A long sentence but a single sentence all the same.
