Larry Flynt on Falwell's passing
My mother always told me that no matter how much you dislike a person, when you meet them face to face you will find characteristics about them that you like. Jerry Falwell was a perfect example of that. I hated everything he stood for, but after meeting him in person, years after the trial, Jerry Falwell and I became good friends. ... I always appreciated his sincerity even though I knew what he was selling and he knew what I was selling." — Hustler magazine founder Larry Flynt.

I was wondering what he'd have to say, and it was charming.

11. I didn't feel hate
I felt a mutual respect between two self-aware, old time snake oil salesmen. I thought it was actually quite sweet -- and very biting.

15. I hated everything he stood for
Unlike Larry, I was lucky since I never met him so all I have are his hate filled words. No tears here.

12. Do you need the definition of "sarcasm"?
Edited on Tue May-15-07 06:26 PM by hiaasenrocks
That was about DU.

I read Larry's statement as one that wasn't pissing on someone's grave. The hate around DU today will probably lead some to read whatever they WANT to read in Larry's statement.

30. I don't believe it was ever hate but rather just being adamant.
His refusal to let others pigeon-hole him and/or box him in...because they want to control or use him as an opportunity to manilipulate their followers into believing they were better...

I'm the same way....I'll never surrender if I believe in my actions/causes or principles because they are mine to own. He stood up for himself and all of us as a result. He is a fighter for autonomy...that is for sure.

8. No doubt true; however...
All of the major tyrants, mass-murderers, etc., etc. have been quite sincere.

Heck, even Hitler was loved by a lot of the German people until the results of his rhetoric became obvious. Then...not so cool anymore.

I've read that he could be quite affable...

24. Not what I meant
Hitler was an evil person - it was his policies that, when carried out, caused the deaths of millions. I merely meant that if you were to sit down with Hitler for a cup of tea, I'm sure that he could present himself as quite a cordial person.

Likewise, I have no doubts that anyone meeting Falwell in person could walk away with the idea that deep down, Falwell was a decent person.

NO, I'm not making a comparison. Falwell isn't a genocidal maniac.

But like my dad always said, "Everyone's nice".

38. Dead men don't scream when you twist the knife like that.
Most everyone here knows what Falwell was selling, yet those who don't somehow want to believe that beneath Flynt's crusty old exterior beats the pure golden heart of a hooker like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.

'taint so.

Somewhere in hell, Jerry's mom waits for him in an outhouse, and it's Larry Flynt who bought the Campari for the Fire and Brimstone.
