6. Falwell was a media creation and simply grabbed the brass ring |
|
when it came his way. He was ambitious personally and saw an opportunity for fame and fortune. He became an effective general for the other side in the culture wars of the past 3 decades... a war we very nearly lost at one point and is still "touch and go" to this day. An effective and dangerous man in his day.

And it's easier to deal with something you're well aware of than something you aren't.
On a slightly more cop-out level, he got a fuckload of people more engaged in politics, and I'd always prefer that over apathy - which, much like fundamentalism, is too goddamn common nowadays.

Really no need to say ill of Fallwell. His words of hatred and venom speak for themselves. He prostituted a single religion, using it to advance doctrines antithetical to that religion. He was a harbinger of hatred.
That being said, he did show us that hatred is alive and well in America. It’s now tied to his perverted brand of Christianity. A good thing we can say about him is he gave the religious right enough confidence to come out of their covens and spew forth their insidious invective. Therefore, we know who these people are now. Without the work of charlatans like Falwell we really wouldn’t know who would joy in lighting the ovens in our modern day concentration camps for the new generation under the auspices of 'cleansing' America's blood.

innocent, vunerable little baby boy, who held a lifetime of promise within. Given the right nurturing, he might have become a man who did much good in the world. Maybe people can look at his life and learn from it.
To be kinder- To consider the damage our words can do- To question why we feel the need to diminish others- To use money and power for things which improve the world for everyone- and not as tools to manipulate and control-
and so many other lessons-

WEIRDEST post eveh. It's hot, and it's day number 490 of DU flipping out over a dead person. I miss the Anna Nichole story. It will never get that good again.
