Five Dead N*ggers vs. Eleven Uttered N*ggers: A Racial Scorecard
IMO, this is a MUST read as it speaks to the penchant of the mostly white-owned and controlled, profit-driven media to miss the most important (part of the) story (as well as a teaching moment)- in favor of protecting their bottom line with ratings (translates into $$$) . What it IS is this: A story about eleven uttered "n*ggers" by some mouthy, racist, opinionated, overly-hyped white woman is more PROFITABLE for the media than reporting on five dead ones - murdered in cold blood for no reason other than BWB - breathing while black. I obfuscated the "N"-word in the title and in this intro - but the actual title and writeup below contains the word and I leave it because it was authored that way.

Five Dead Niggers vs. Eleven Uttered Niggers: A Racial Scorecard
by Mark Anthony Neal

One index of contemporary race politics in the United States is the recent arrest of accused Israeli serial killer Elias Abuelazam and Dr. Laura Schlessinger’s on-air utterings of the word “nigger.” On their own merit, the Abuelazam arrest, in which he is accused of stabbing thirteen men, five of them fatally, and virtually all of them Black, should easily trump the meltdown of yet another way-too visible, highly compensated so-called celebrity. But such is not the case; while Schlessinger’s rant has been the talk of the chattering class on faux news programs and the blogosphere, even eliciting an apology by Schlessinger herself, the Abuelazam case has been buried in newspaper accounts, as Tom Socca points out in his smart piece “How Many Black Men Do You Have to Murder to Make the Front Page of the New York Times?” At the crux of the media’s seeming disconnect is the reality that eleven uttered “niggers” are a better news story than five dead “niggers.”

The mainstream corporate media’s gravitation to the Schlessinger story, might be excused if it actually forwarded an honest and critical conversation about race—or rather Black/White relations—but a cursory listen to the Schlessinger broadcast, which has gone viral, is a quick reminder of that impossibility. Weeks after the Shirley Sherrod controversy, in which commentators collectively missed an opportunity to illuminate the realities of racial terror and violence for the Youtube generation, Schlessinger’s comparison of the racist sentiments felt by a black women caller involved in an interracial marriage, to the routines of “black comedians” on HBO is juvenile.

1. I tentatively agree, one is a much bigger story then the other. The racial side of the murders needs
to be investigated.

9. It definitely needs investigation.
I'm guessing it won't get any investigation and/or if it does, we'll never hear a peep about it, or about the result. It's just deemed unimportant news because it won't get enough ratings (ie: $$$) for the media.

13. The suspect was an Arab Israeli
Not Johnny "Redneck" Teabagger, so this dialog on race is trickier - but necessary!

My experience in living in an area with a heavy middle eastern population, and working for Chaldeans, is that many of them can be viciously racist towards African Americans!

We need to tear down the capitialist doctrine of divide and conquer that turns the oppressed against each other, as opposed to standing united against the real enemy!

2. Had to rec this
And adding - I'm disturbed that so many in the so-called media were IMMEDIATELY willing to give Dr. Laura the benefit of the doubt . . . but not Ms. Sherrod.

3. Mr. Neal is apparently a vicious racist, since he used the n-word
even using it in reference to people who had been murdered. I hope Sharpton demands an apology.

5. That's because Dr. Laura is famous
Therefore everything she does is more important to the average person than some people that aren't famous. They don't really matter anyway, because no one has ever heard of them.

We in this country have an amazing ability for sucking up to the rich/famous. It will be our undoing.

6. 'more important' = ratings = $$$$
That's what the media cares about.

10. Using a word has become worse than the plight of a people who are disproportionately
Undereducated, underpaid, and underemployed.

Getting blacks to focus on outrage over a word and not focus on outrage on education is the biggest scam ever.

11. Do they know the motivations behind the murders yet?
If not, it's all just speculation at this point. As it is, the mainstream media rarely covers local murder or serial killers, whoever they are killing. Laura is considered a national figure. Serial killers are left for local news, because nobody really cares if it's not around them. The guy is from Israel, where he also stabbed somebody. He's not even American, and many wouldn't consider him "white" in the American sense just by his name and birthplace. I think trying to make a serial killer story something it is not before knowing all the facts doesn't help. Indeed, if the story was highlighted, many on here would think it's because the guy has a Muslim sounding name and therefore it was evidence of discrimination against Muslims that they pay attention to the story, when most local murder stories are never covered nationally.

14. Not yet investigated (see previous comment about that)...
..but it seems to be more than coincidence that all victims were black. Clear pattern of behavior there.
