President Obama begins vacation, takes parting shots at republicans

(AFP) – 31 minutes ago

VINEYARD HAVEN, Massachusetts —

Upon arriving at the upscale Martha's Vineyard resort for a 10-day vacation, Obama took advantage of Congress being on summer recess to make four nominations that had been stalled by Republicans.

The four, known as recess appointments, included Winslow Sargeant as senior official at the Small Business Administration, Richard Sorian as a senior public affairs official at the Department of Health and Human Services and Elisabeth Hagen as food safety undersecretary at the Department of Agriculture.

Before departing Washington, Obama slammed his Republican foes for using delay tactics in Congress to block a bill to spur job creation. He accused them of stalling for political purposes ahead of November elections.

"There are times when Democrats and Republicans have legitimate differences, rooted in different views about what's best for this country. There are times when good people disagree in good faith," he said . . .

"But this is not one of those times," said Obama, sharply criticizing Republicans for using parliamentary delaying tactics to block a vote on the legislation.

1. Another vacation?
All I hear about Obama these days is where he is at on vacation. Is he vacationing all summer or something? I mean, I don't blame him, I'd love to do the same thing. Anyone know how much vacation he has taken this year?

edit: this link is a bit old, but there's no comparison in vacation time to previous presidents.

9. Quite a telling statement you made. To my knowledge, only rightwingers
use the "Another vacation" line of approach.

6. Obama Uses Recess Appointment To Place Openly Gay Man In HHS Position
Richard Sorian was appointed by President Barack Obama to be the assistant secretary for public affairs at the Department of Health and Human Services back in October 2009. Today, he was appointed by President Obama via a recess appointment. The temper tantrums and foot dragging from the Republican Party has meant that many positions remain empty almost a year into the Obama Presidency . . .
