I've got to get out of this crazy ass state - statue of Zell to be debated
Should Zell Miller be honored with a statue on the grounds of the state Capitol?

House lawmakers are expected to take up that question Wednesday when Republicans argue the former U.S. senator and Georgia governor deserves a monument in his honor.

The maverick Democrat was lambasted by his own party and praised by Republicans after he gave the keynote address at President Bush's 2000 Republican nomination.

Since then he has backed leading GOP leaders, including Gov, Sonny Perdue's re-election.

1. I feel your pain! I used to be so proud to be from Georgia...
now I never mention the fact. I have been living in Mississippi since 1998 and have watched in horror as Georgia attempts to flush itself down the toilet. At least Mississippi has no place to go but up.

2. Didn't he speak in 2004?
With this and them trying to take McKinney's name off a DeKalb County road, your repugs are sure bitter.

5. Now now now CatWoman - I hope to hell they do build this statue
Edited on Wed Jan-31-07 10:56 AM by RubyDuby in GA
I hereby solemly promise to throw eggs at it every single day and I promise to TP it on his, mine and anyone else's birthday I can think of. I do so swear!

Oh, and me and the family are leaning towards either Oregon or Vermont. I had hoped for some liberal land that's actually warm, but I guess that's asking for too much (CA doesnt' count - they are just crazy out there).

6. How about one to a real Republican

William Tecumseh Sherman. And don't say people in the south can't honor Northern Republicans from the 1800's, in Louisiana we have Grant, Lincoln, and Union parishes and we are naming a building at LSU after General Sherman.

House approves Zell Miller statue
By Jeremy Redmon | Wednesday, January 31, 2007, 12:42 PM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The House of Representatives approved a resolution today calling for a statue to former U.S. Sen. Zell Miller on the State Capitol grounds.

Backed by several House Republican leaders, HR16 urges the Capitol Arts Standards Commission to move forward with the project, calling the Democrat “one of Georgia’s most distinguished native sons.”

“The time is right,” state Rep. Ben Bridges Sr. (R-Cleveland), who sponsored the resolution, told the House this morning. “I know of no one who has done more for the people of this state than Zell Miller.”

Bridges joined other representatives in honoring Miller’s service to Georgia as former state senator, lieutenant governor and governor. And they cited Miller’s efforts to establish Georgia’s popular pre-kindergarten and HOPE scholarship programs.

Miller, who also served as Georgia’s lieutenant governor and governor, is a maverick Democrat who endorsed Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue for governor in May over Democratic Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor.

13. Will his face be depicted as batshit crazy as he is??
A dignified rendering will not do, they need to capture his facial expression right.

21. who pays for this stunt?
So, they get to needle the Democrats and who is going to foot the bill? If it comes out of your state/property/sales tax you should be pissed in a major way.

14. What an affront to pigeons!
However, I'll be the first to spray the statue wit Mrs. Butterworth's and tasty bird seed to assure the statue stays buried under inches of birdshit.
