Help Turn Off Fox
By James Rucker

http://crooksandliars.com/james-rucker/help-turn-fox

Have you ever looked up at the television at a local business -- your gym, an auto shop, a bar or restaurant -- only to find Glenn Beck or Bill O'Reilly shouting down at you? Often without thinking about it, many businesses and other public establishments are providing a vehicle for Fox News' attempts to divide America. Now you can do something about it.

Today, ColorOfChange.org is launching Turn Off Fox -- a massive campaign to get Fox News turned off in stores, restaurants, and other public places.

There are several ways you can get involved:

* Join the campaign by signing our petition calling on businesses in your community and across America to turn off Fox News Channel (you'll also get a free TurnOffFox sticker!)
* Know of businesses or other public places that play Fox News? You can help us identify them, and if you're willing to talk with them, we provide materials that make it easy to explain why they should change the channel.
* If there are businesses you know that want to tell the world they would never play Fox, you can help them declare themselves a "Fox-free zone."
* Spread the word and get your friends and family involved in the campaign.

Please check out TurnOffFox.org, join us, and get involved!

Get your free Turn Off Fox sticker

When you join the campaign, you'll also have the opportunity to get a free Turn Off Fox bumper sticker -- and even the shipping is free! You can get 5 stickers for a donation of $3, 20 stickers for $10, or 50 stickers for $20. Getting stickers (and sharing them with your friends) isn't just about making a personal statement of your values. It helps to build awareness of our brand and our message, and makes it easier to educate folks about why Fox News is unparalleled in its propagation of division and bigotry.

Here's a summary of why we are asking businesses and other public establishments to refuse to play Fox News Channel:

* Fox News divides our country. Fox News hosts and guests regularly attempt to pit groups of people against one another - white against black, US-born against immigrant, gay against straight and men against women.

Some of the network's most divisive rhetoric is spouted when the topic of race. In July 2009, Fox host Glenn Beck called President Obama a "racist" who has "a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture" -- a statement with which Fox Chairman Rupert Murdoch has since said he agrees. Frequent Fox guest Jesse Lee Peterson has said that most black people lack moral character, and cited "what they did to the dome" after Hurricane Katrina as evidence. Recently, Fox News contributor John Stossel called for the repeal of a key provision of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that prevents business owners from discriminating based on race. And Fox News hosts Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity were the first to air maliciously edited video of Shirley Sherrod's speech to the Georgia NAACP -- video that cost Sherrod her job with the USDA. The recent episode involving Sherrod has helped confirm what we have long known -- that Fox is a propaganda machine with no regard for the truth.

Glenn Beck calling President Obama a "racist" was the most blatant example of Fox News leading the effort paint the President as someone who harbors and acts upon deeply held prejudice against white people. But the network consistently tries to create the impression that black political and civic leaders want to "get even" with whites by taking their wealth and giving it to blacks.

We've seen the hateful atmosphere that has arisen at Tea Parties because of this false narrative. As the House of Representatives deliberated over health care legislation this past spring, some Tea Party members gathered outside the Capitol shouted "Ni**er!" at black congressmen. One of the protesters spat on Congressman Emmanuel Cleaver, while another called openly gay Representative Barney Frank a "faggot" as the laughing crowd imitated his lisp. The Tea Party has been uncritically promoted and embraced by Fox News since its inception.
* Fox News is dangerous. The connection between the network's inflammatory, violent rhetoric and its real world effects is clear. Two examples demonstrate this, though more exist.

Last year, abortion doctor George Tiller was gunned down in his church after being demonized for years by Fox's Bill O'Reilly as "Tiller the Baby Killer." O'Reilly had compared Tiller to the Nazis and to Al-Qaeda. He said that Tiller had "blood on his hands" and that he wouldn't want to be Tiller "if there is a Judgement Day."

In another example, a man armed with a rifle, a shotgun and a handgun opened fire on California Highway Patrol officers on an Oakland freeway in July of this year. After he was apprehended, police determined the shooter was on his way to the American Civil Liberties Union and Tides Foundation offices in San Francisco to kill people. In the aftermath of the tragedy, the shooter's mother said that her son watched a lot of television news and was angry at left-wing politicians and organizations. While many Americans are aware of the ACLU's work, the Tides Foundation is a little-known non-profit organization that most people had never heard of -- until Fox's Glenn Beck started demonizing and spreading false information about the organization. Since Beck's show premiered in January of 2009, he has pushed conspiracy theories involving Tides on nearly 30 episodes. During the same time period, Tides was never mentioned on other cable or network news channels, according to a report by the watchdog group Media Matters.
* Fox News Channel isn't really news. Real news stations don't engage in smear campaigns founded on lies and half-truths.

Fox News insists that they're a legitimate news network. They engage in divisive rhetoric, race-baiting and attempts at character assassinations, but they do it all under the guise of reporting the news. Often the mainstream media eventually takes the bait and runs with Fox News' distortions and smear campaigns. When businesses and public places play Fox News, they become a conduit for its stream of misinformation, and it contributes to the misconception that the network is a credible source for news and information.

This campaign is about organizing people to use their feet and their dollars to encourage establishments not to spread Fox 's poison in their communities.

To learn more, and to join the campaign, please visit our website at TurnOffFox.org.

For the post, sounds good. An alternative is to "debate" openly and call the crap out. Chances are, people there feel the same as you and just don't say anything. Use those who have it on as an opportunity to debate.

Where would you send your friends who are looking for unbiased news?

MSNBC is out, they are just as biased as Fox.

So what out there is unbiased enough to give people access to real factual news and allows people to think for themselves?

both do commendable jobs of dispassionate and objective reporting.Fux noise is basically 24/7 right wing radio with visuals, and while MSNBC may be seen to have a lean at least their reports are not calculated to inflame and appeal to our worst instincts.Anyone really thinking for themselves accesses multiple sources and independently verifies as far as it's possible to do.

82. Are you implying that Fox is unbiased?
I think you are. If Fox goes away then all news will become less unbiased as the Fox effect will be lessened. Of course the return of the fairness doctrine to the FCC would help alot.

However to add to the excellent suggestions below I would suggest the Guardian newspaper website for American politics. They have a lot of reports on the ground here and have broken several important stories that the high paid corporate network newswhores / talking heads / meat puppets have not even tried to.

There is also pacifica news, which is a loose affiliation of radio stations that pool their money to provide good reporting.

But I do agree that Democracy now has a bias, one that they admit to. They appear to be addicted to the truth.

For those that are jumping to conclusions because they can not see past their own bias, I HATE Fox news! Complete garbage, IMHO. I also HATE MSNBC.

If you are going to be against biased news and dishonest sources claiming to be news that be universal. If you don't like Fox becuase you prefer a bias that supports your own bias fine, but be honest about it.

161. Ah, but no one here is advocating for MSNBC to replace Faux News in these public places.
So that's a bit of a "straw-man", as it were. I have theorized for quite some time that this is how Faux News gets its vaunted "ratings". They're counting the fact that they pay places like Fry's, World Gym, etc., to be on CONSTANTLY. They are counting all of those incidental "viewers". Bastards.

BTW- Radio talkshow host Norman Goldman came up the F.O.X acronym.

Once not too long ago, at a small restaurant/bar my wife and I let the owners know we would stay and eat only if Fox was turned off. They turned it off.

Confession though, usually when I turn off Fox News, I turn the set off entirely rather than just change the channel.

I also bring up the education of the bunch at Fox and how they are puppets of Ruppert. After all a good journalist shouldn't be bribed but money talks to flunkies and murdoch knows it. All you need is a dumb fuck, a big mouth and lot's of money.

52. Here is what I did...
I was working at Cymer in San Diego. In the cafeteria, all the TV's were tuned to Fox.
The person is charge of the TV's was the safety rep. and he was a retired Navy officer,
very conservative, very right-wing. No wonder he kept it on Fox. The TV's were controlled
by a DirecTV STB in a locked cabinet in the cafeteria.

I purchased a cheap Universal Remote Control, and programmed it for DirecTV.
Every time I had lunch in the cafeteria, I would covertly take the universal remote, sit
in front of the locked cabinet, and change the channel to either MSNBC, CNN or ESPN,
depending and which had the best programming.

The retired Navy officer would enter the cafeteria, and stare with a puzzled look at the
TV, trying to figure out how the channel was changed. He'd leave for about 2-3 minutes
and return with the key to the locked cabinet and change the channel back to Fox. Then
while walking back to his office, still in the cafeteria, I'd change the TV back to the
channel we were previously watching.

You could see his brain explode with confusion, trying to figure out how the channel was
changing if the Remote Control was locked in the cabinet.

Several like minded friends, knew about my remote control and would sometimes ask to borrow
my universal remote, while they ate in the cafeteria.

we have a convenient store monopoly in town. an independent opened and i made sure i went there to help out new business and provide some competition even though not as good and more expensive than the monopoly.

they show fox

i told them that they put so much effort into degrading women and promoting hate as they lecture me on christian and family values. i wont give my money to a company that has that on. that any story they can find that is degrading to females, they put on fox for their old male entertainment, and that, i refuse, to support. tht i call it foxporn.

i only talked to management, but is right by home. i am going to address the owners in next couple days.

i am never quiet about it. i wont let it stand

they told me, some people would be as bothered with other channels. i told him, turn it all off then.

that wouldn't offend anyone. They could always turn on the Weather Channel or sports. Of course, I really can't see why a store like that needs a television on anyway.

why is it, in these days, we feel the need to have a TV on where ever we go? I cannot understand it. When I visit a local store I am there to buy something, or ask the staff questions. TV just gets in the way of that- but maybe I am just old fashioned.

have the owners of these establishments turn on to Fox and then it is counted as viewers and I am sure the ADD a heck of lot because it is a business. At our hospital clinic, if Fox is on someone always goes changes the channel. The refuse to watch it.

88. No it is not.
Ask yourself this question... how does anyone know what your watching? How do they know what some random establishment is watching? They don't. In order for anyone to know what you are watching and included in the ratings is to be one of the few thousand that are randomly selected to be a Nielsen Family and for your home to specially wired for monitoring by Nielsen. And they don't do this with establishments. Advertisers don't care about establishment viewers because they are far less likely to be paying attention to any commercials.

Going and changing the channel won't affect anything.

141. You would be correct, if this were 1981.
These days, all cable systems are 2-way, reporting back what channel each box is tuned to. Today's ratings figures are thus significantly more accurate than the Nielsen-only techniques prevalent 30 years ago.

158. Regardless of two-way capabilities of cable boxes
They are not using it to monitor your or my viewing habits. The ratings still come from Nielsen.

Of course if you'd like to show me otherwise, please do. Show me where/who is compiling them and that TV and advertisers are using them.

162. Well, I saw the process at the company I used to work for.
We created a book-club type program that ran on the local cable channel. After each airing, the cable people showed us a minute-by-minute graph of how many people were tuned in to the program, so we could see when we lost a bunch of viewers, when people suddenly tuned in, etc. They said they do this for all of their programming.

Please note that I did not say that they were "monitoring my viewing habits", only that they have a precise count of viewership for any particular program and thus do not need to call anyone to ask if their TV is on, hand out Nielsen diaries, etc.

I might add that if the cable company wanted to monitor anyone's specific viewing habits, it would be a simple matter of re-programming. Who knows? Maybe they already are. It's not like they'd tell us or anything.

The only time I ever see it is when Keith or John exerpt it. Occasionally when Mrs. Solomon puts it on Beck or Hannity just "see what they're saying" or to raise my BP. I feel for the rest of America.

I'll just go some place else if they bitch. I've already threatened to leave a doctors office and they changed the channel rather than see me leave. Who in their right mind is going to insist on having Fux on the tv when it means you're not going to do business with them because of it. Bone up ...people ...and get some ballz.

102. Kr; tu da moon....The hospital in my town, only a few blocks from my house; Used to run Fuxus
Edited on Thu Aug-26-10 08:54 PM by ooglymoogly
news on all their umpteen monitors.

That was before the volcano erupted;

When I was coming out from anesthesia about a year ago I woke up to Glen Beck screaming like Hitler in my ears. At first I was just stunned... I sat bolt upright and threw an uncharacteristic, melodramatic fit, that surprised even me; flailing my arms complete with all the post op plumbing losing the finger monitor and life monitors flying asunder, setting off alarms and mortifying the nurses as emergency staff rushed into the room. I told them to get that god damned Nazi crap away from my ears and out of my sight.

Not sure why so much anger was boiling over at that time.

Needless to say they scrambled to shut off the monitor by yanking the plug from its socket. One of the nurses came to calm me down and check the connections and reconnect the monitors;...."They don't listen to us" "Now the admins will stop this nonsense" I heard one of the nurses say to the the others while others appeared to agree. I was on a morphine drip, cranky from the pain of surgery, a little loopy, was fearless and had few inhibitions. Not a good time to fool with my senses.

The next day when I became ambulatory, walking with the bottles and plumbing still attached to my veins, but now on rollers, I searched out the chief; And ask whether it was he who was forcing this right wing propaganda on his patients; Some even comatose but many just out of it.

He turned a beet red and just sputtered, "I don't regulate that", which I found out was a bald faced lie, checking with my doctor and the nursing staff some of whom I knew. "All of us pay your salary; Not just republicans", "This is a community hospital, Not a Republican propaganda outlet; And you are treading a thin line with this kind of crap"; Anger building, I continuing on, "I will be talking to the mayor (a true Democrat) about this; The mayor is A man I know and for whom I have much respect and I put banners across my house and yard at election time.

Looking back on that incident, I don't know where the chutzpa came from; Though I do understand where the anger came from as I still have it where fux news is concerned.

All to say I have never seen Fuxus news on any of the monitors since.

Hospitals are a good place to find this kind of treachery as they become more and more privatized.

120. what a horrible way to wake up from anesthesia... like a nightmare
That's not just a reference to Glenn Beck--I mean it'd be horrible to wake up to any kind of anger and negativity and ranting. Fox wouldn't even be good for people who agree with that crap--who wants to wake up to someone trying to get them enraged?

Good for you. And good for your nurses. I hope your health is good now.

103. Couple of years ago I went into my local bank and Fox was on.
I went home, wrote to the President of the bank, and told him I'd close all my accounts if they didn't
change the channel.

They did! I've never seen Fox on again any time I go in the bank.

I always switch the channel. If I can't do it, I tell the establishment where it is playing that I am offended by the racism at Fox News and will not do business there with that network playing when there are so many other choices. I've never, not once, had anyone object to changing the channel.

Great campaign.

114. recommending and kicking it up...was shocked to see it on in a small restaurant
Edited on Thu Aug-26-10 10:06 PM by AuntPatsy
this am located in a very small border town where it is more than obvious that cash flow is not the norm....if not for my husband having been up all night on the phone and stressed out I would have asked politely to have it turned off..instead this one time I simply moved chairs and kept my back to the small screen. My husband said not a word I am sure knowing full well why I moved but probably thankful that I did not start anything...this evening he took me to another one, not many in town and this was one of the so called nicer ones..we might have both gotten ill from the restaurant we went to for dinner but no complaints here...would rather be ill from food than from having to listen to that garbage..the truth..feel better now though..thankfully it appears not to have been food poisoning since it was just a slight queasy feeling...

I too usually either change the channel myself if at all possible or tell them to..never had a problem getting it gone from my site using fairly even tones accept at home when husband was a watcher..he fought me tooth and nail..but in the end..we both won, he turned from it..

115. It's heart-warming to see
so many people stepping up and voicing their disgust with TV's in public places tuned to Fox.

The reality is it needs to be unplugged totally for inciting fear and insurrection, especially Beck. He shouts "FIRE" every damn day, only the audience is not limited to a movie theater.

123. Time To Stop This Mass Brain Washing
Fox News calling themselves fair and balanced is about as far from truth as possible, it's just laughable.

Unfortunately it's not just Fox "News" on the tube all over the place, it's hardback book display and placement. Meijer has dropped all pretense and jumped in with both feet, the main display of hardbacks, easy to see if you go into one of their two main entrances, is all Hannity, Cheney, etc. - they even have them prominently displayed in the checkout lines. Not one political book from non wing nuts.

Sadly, Target is only a little less guilty with the books, it's all Beck/Cheney/Coulter types but at least they don't put them in the checkout lines. Target's recent donation revelation combined with the fascist like books irks me no end, I love their stores and have spent a ton of money there every year.

Fox is a stalk show impersonating as news. While it does report news it does very little investigative journalism. I equate it to the Star, Enquirer etc but worse. I call it a stalk show because it preys on the irrational and prejudice component of the country. Not to mention the sociopaths who need affirmation daily that they are right to be neurotic.

They're an insult to the average thinking person and should be marginalized. They're style of tabloid kvetching has become an issue of national security as they incite these people to negative reactions. This is not free speech but abuse of it. There was a time when the FCC would have stepped in against the likes of Limbaugh and Beck. Nilhilistic media today brings in the largesse.

We have to have a counter to that kind of destructive and corrosive discharging which is why MSNBC has stepped up it's bias. I'm grateful for that. However it would be better if we had a real working government that actually fined a corporation for it's
flagrant abuse of the airways to line it's pockets while undermining majority rule to favor the radical few.
