I Was Wrong. And I've Opened My Eyes to Impeachment.
by wmtriallawyer
Wed May 16, 2007 at 12:04:03 PM PDT

It's time for my mea culpa. It's time for my John Edwards moment. It's time for me to say I was wrong. And I apologize.

You see, a little over two years ago, I had one of my first recommended diaries here at Daily Kos, arguing against the constant harangue of impeachment talk, titled Stop the Impeachment Talk Already!

I'd like to take it all back. The circumstances have changed...I've changed. It's time for me to get on the bandwagon. It's time for the drums to beat louder.

It's time for all of them to go.

~Snip~

For all this, one needs a catalyst to make them reach this conclusion. To me, it's Comey's testimony from yesterday. It is so damning in so many ways. It was a deliberate usurping of our Department of Justice by the Presidency. It was an attempt to illegally seize the reins of government to circumvent the Constitution and deliberately trample on the Bill of Rights. Who gave them the right to do this? Who gave them the right to act in such a heinous matter?

Sometimes, it takes a day for this stuff to sink in. When I finally got around to watching Comey's testimony today, it only took a matter of minutes.

They...must...go.

On Katrina, they could hide behind incompetence. On Iraq, they could hide behind the so-called faulty intelligence. But on what has gone on with our Department of "Just-us", there is no more hiding.

It's Nixon again. Maybe worse...Nixon covered it up. These guys were just more brazen about it all.

More - Daily Kos

More and more are jumping on this bandwagon...I'm all aboard - who's with me?

IMPEACH THEM ALL!!!!

months now - I was pointing out that more and more people are jumping on the bus! I has thought at one time that a Democratic Congress would slow the Cabal down - they are pushing forward with no regrets.....with Murtha just recently throwing the I word around lately, it still can happen.

Ultimately, that is why impeachment is imperative.

Letting them repeatedly commit high crimes with impugnity is a slippery slope to the dissolution of the American experiment.

15. Precisely!!
If we want to restore our nation to a nation of laws, to a just nation based upon basic principles of "libery and justice for all" we have no other choice than to impeach.

Pelosi and Reid need to lead and they need to uphold their sacred oaths to defend the Constitution, if they cannot then they need to get the hell out of the way and let those brave enough to lead do so.

14. Yep, I hope more come to the light, have the appropriate sense of
danger about losing our republic. I'll throw in these tidbits from Chalmers Johnson,

"In politics, as in medicine, a cure based on a false diagnosis is almost always worthless, often worsening the condition that is supposed to be healed. The United States, today, suffers from a plethora of public ills. Most of them can be traced to the militarism and imperialism that have led to the near-collapse of our Constitutional system of checks and balances. Unfortunately, none of the remedies proposed so far by American politicians or analysts addresses the root causes of the problem."

-snip-

"If these people actually believe a presidential election a year-and-a-half from now will significantly alter how the country is run, they have almost surely wasted their money. As Andrew Bacevich, author of The New American Militarism, puts it: "None of the Democrats vying to replace President Bush is doing so with the promise of reviving the system of check and balances.... The aim of the party out of power is not to cut the presidency down to size but to seize it, not to reduce the prerogatives of the executive branch but to regain them." "

-snip-

"On the home front, despite the post-9/11 congressional authorization of new surveillance powers to the administration, its officials chose to ignore these and, on its own initiative, undertook extensive spying on American citizens without obtaining the necessary judicial warrants and without reporting to Congress on this program. These actions are prima-facie violations of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 (and subsequent revisions) and of Amendment IV of the Constitution."

-snip-

"These alone constitute more than adequate grounds for impeachment, while hardly scratching the surface. And yet, on the eve of the national elections of November 2006, then House Minority Leader, now Speaker, Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), pledged on the CBS News program "60 Minutes" that "impeachment is off the table." She called it "a waste of time." And six months after the Democratic Party took control of both houses of Congress, the prison at Guantánamo Bay was still open and conducting drumhead courts martial of the prisoners held there; the CIA was still using "enhanced interrogation techniques" on prisoners in foreign jails; illegal intrusions into the privacy of American citizens continued unabated; and, more than fifty years after the CIA was founded, it continues to operate under, at best, the most perfunctory congressional oversight."

When it comes to Bush and his henchmen (and henchwomen), imagine the worst possible illegal behaviour. This is what will be found if all the rocks are turned over. These people are the very worst. I know it. I have a gut feeling about this.

And something must be done about their manipulation of voter's rights. Their removing legal voters from the rolls.

33. I've always said...investigate first, then worry about impeachment.
After all, if Pelosi had been campaigning on impeachment, she would have been accused of power mongering, since she is next in line after Cheney.

The investigatios are starting to unveil the evil of this administration. The more we as the American people see, the more likely removal will be seriously contemplated.

45. Exactly
It would have been a colossal mistake for Nancy P to announce last Fall, "If you elect Dems to Congress, we're going to do everything in our power to make ME the President."

Until about 20 Repub Senators see it's in their best interest to throw Bush out of office, impeachment isn't going to budge him. What we're learning now may be enough to them.

50. There is Nothing to "Investigate" ...
... and The American People have seen more than enough. That's why a majority already support impeachment -- even in the face of direct opposition from the DC-Dem "leadership."

This has been true since before the election:

Had they run on impeachment, they might well have forced the GOP rats to escape his sinking ship last year -- instead of just beginning to now.

And there's no reason to "investigate" what the regime already admits. They claim the right to illegally torture and spy on Americans. RNC talking points about "next in line" coups -- like any comparison to Clinton "ickiness" -- are easily dealt with by a dose of reality (like the fact that cheney can resign at any time to move in a congressionally-approved, caretaker GOP VP/POTUS-in-waiting).

All that is left is for DC Dems, GOP Senators, and the Euphemedia to disapprove and act. Their current complicity is a war crime in itself, costs lives in Iraq daily, and perpetuates the ongoing degradation of our once-great nation.

Only Impeachment ... is a substantive act.

It IS our positive agenda.

It is our ONLY moral, patriotic option.

34. Why do people say impeachment when they mean removal from office?
He says it's "time for all of them to go", which I think we all agree with. So why do we just focus on impeachment which will solve nothing unless we can also get a conviction?

I don't want impeachment. I want conviction and removal from office. If all I can get is impeachment, I'd just as soon do something else.

Perhaps because people - even knowledgable people - understand that the two-step process focuses on 'Articles Of Impeachment.' In general termes, step one is their composition and step two is their validation.

Impeach. Remove. Indict. Convict. Imprison. (Rinse. Repeat.)

impeach

One entry found for impeach.

Main Entry: 1im·peach
Pronunciation: im-'pEch
Function: transitive verb
Etymology: Middle English empechen, from Anglo-French empecher, enpechier to ensnare,
impede, prosecute, from Late Latin impedicare to fetter, from Latin in- + pedica fetter,
from ped-, pes foot -- more at FOOT

1 a : to bring an accusation against

b : to charge with a crime or misdemeanor;
specifically: to charge (a public official) before a competent tribunal with misconduct in office

c : to remove from office especially for misconduct

2 : to cast doubt on; especially : to challenge the credibility or validity of <impeach the testimony of a witness>

- im·peach·able /-'pE-ch&-b&l/ adjective

- im·peach·ment /-'pEch-m&nt/ noun

----------------------

I think most people don't say,
"I'm going to eat peas and then I'm going to eat chicken."

They just say, "I'm going to eat supper."

44. I've known for a long time that they all need to go
I just don't see that impeachment will change a darned thing for the better. The House impeaches, Rove gets a new battle that he can fight, the Senate fails to convict, Bush swaggers around as if he's the MVP of the Superbowl.

In other words, the focus goes off the USA firings and Gonzo's ghoulish behavior in the ICU onto "those mean Dems are just trying to get payback for impeaching Clinton." It's a losing strategy.

If you want to talk about impeaching Gonzo, that's a different story, and I'm with you. You're not going to touch Bush by impeaching him now.
