I'm thinking of getting more involved in the environmental movement (as opposed to just approving when candidates rhetorically support a clean, healthy environment). Which environmental organizations are you members of, or which would you recommend?

1. I belong to these two:
Environmental Defense:

About Us:
Founded in 1967 as the Environmental Defense Fund, or EDF, we speak for 500,000 members.
We find innovative, practical ways to solve the most urgent environmental problems.

Defenders of Wildlife:

Our Mission:

Defenders of Wildlife is dedicated to the protection of all native wild animals and plants in their natural communities. We focus our programs on what scientists consider two of the most serious environmental threats to the planet: the accelerating rate of extinction of species and the associated loss of biological diversity, and habitat alteration and destruction. Long known for our leadership on endangered species issues, Defenders of Wildlife also advocates new approaches to wildlife conservation that will help keep species from becoming endangered. Our programs encourage protection of entire ecosystems and interconnected habitats while protecting predators that serve as indicator species for ecosystem health.

I am a somewhat active(always donate and volunteer as often as I can) member of the following groups:

The Sierra Club (http://www.sierraclub.org/)
Natural Resources Defense council (NRDC) (http://www.nrdc.org/)
Pirgim (http://www.pirgim.org/ your state should have one)
Defenders of Wildlife (http://www.defenders.org/)
The Nature Conservancy (http://www.nature.org/)
The National Wildlife Federation (http://www.nwf.org/)
World Wildlife Fund (http://www.worldwildlife.org/)
Greenpeace(http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/)
Union of Concerned Scientists (http://www.ucsusa.org/)
The Wilderness Society (http://www.wilderness.org/)
League of Conservation Voters (LCV) (http://www.lcv.org)
National Parks Conservation Association (http://www.npca.org/)
Oceana(http://www.oceana.org/international-home-nao/)
Bluewater Action Network (http://www.bluewaternetwork.org/)
The Audubon society (http://www.audubon.org/)

The Farm Sanctuary (http://www.farmsanctuary.org)
The Fund for Animals(http://www.fund.org)
The Songbird Protection Coalition
Humane Society of the US(http://www.hsus.org)

Plus a bunch of local groups.

The last 4 there are more animal groups than strictly environmental, but they are against some of the things that are common target of the two movements like factory farming.

LCV is more about electing candidates with good enviro records. The Sierra Club and The Audubon Society are good solid groups, but I find them to be rather like dinosaurs. I have found local groups the best to get involved with in a manner such that you can effect actual change.

I also get action alerts from Care2 (http://www.care2.com/), Grist (http://www.grist.org), the ASPCA and some other web-sites.

About LCV

http://www.lcv.org/about-lcv/

The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) is the independent political voice for the environment.
To secure the environmental future of our planet, LCV’s mission is to advocate for sound
environmental policies and to elect pro-environmental candidates who will adopt and implement
such policies.

* Through our National Environmental Scorecard and Presidential Report Card (pdf) we inform
the public about the most important environmental legislation of the past Congressional session
and show them how their own and other representatives voted.

* We run tough and effective campaigns to defeat anti-environment candidates, and support
those leaders who stand up for a clean, healthy future for America.

* We educate the public, build coalitions, promote grassroots power, and train the next
generation of environmental leaders as part of our grassroots efforts.

The LCV Family of Organizations includes LCV, LCV Action Fund, LCV Accountability Project,
and LCV Education Fund.

7. None right now, but in my former (and

likely again) career I had memberships in several professional societies concerned with ecology and topics associated with my work in environmental sciences. As for the kinds of things you're talking about, I am particularly impressed with the WWF and The Nature Conservancy -- I've had memberships with both (and a few others at different times, local and international) but have also worked with them in outreach programs and in the field, in the US and overseas, and can vouch for them putting their money squarely where their mouths are.

I would never support groups like Greenpeace or Earth First...they make some good points and do some good things (well, Greenpeace does, anyway), but their net effect is as negative as that of other extremist groups. As an environmental professional I'd never get mixed up with them but that was also true before I began my formal career in ecology/etc.

8. I recommend getting involved with your local government
Most municipalities have boards and commissions where citizens can serve and make recommendations.

Some city employees have good intentions but just don't have the time to research environmental issues to see which changes are feasible. Do the work for them. Most are receptive to reasonable suggestions.

11. The following, although all are not current:
Sierra Club

League of Conservation Voters

World Wildlife Fund

The Audubon Society

National Arbor Day Foundation (this is a great one $10 a/yr and they send you 10 trees to plant!)

Environmental Defense Fund

The Nature Conservancy

The National Wildlife Federation

The Wilderness Society

Natural Resources Defense Council

Ocean Conservancy

I think there are others that I have belonged to at one time or another, plus numerous humanitarian orgs. But times have been tough, paying rent, keeping the lights on and food on the table take priority these days, and that is always iffy this past year ofr so, in fact, I might be living in the wilderness of Nebraska very soon...:(

But when things get better, I'll re-up...:D
