Which environmental organizations are you a member of, if any?

I'm thinking of getting more involved in the environmental movement (as opposed to just approving when candidates rhetorically support a clean, healthy environment). Which environmental organizations are you members of, or which would you recommend?

The last 4 there are more animal groups than strictly environmental, but they are against some of the things that are common target of the two movements like factory farming.

LCV is more about electing candidates with good enviro records. The Sierra Club and The Audubon Society are good solid groups, but I find them to be rather like dinosaurs. I have found local groups the best to get involved with in a manner such that you can effect actual change.

7. None right now, but in my former (and

likely again) career I had memberships in several professional societies concerned with ecology and topics associated with my work in environmental sciences. As for the kinds of things you're talking about, I am particularly impressed with the WWF and The Nature Conservancy -- I've had memberships with both (and a few others at different times, local and international) but have also worked with them in outreach programs and in the field, in the US and overseas, and can vouch for them putting their money squarely where their mouths are.

I would never support groups like Greenpeace or Earth First...they make some good points and do some good things (well, Greenpeace does, anyway), but their net effect is as negative as that of other extremist groups. As an environmental professional I'd never get mixed up with them but that was also true before I began my formal career in ecology/etc.

8. I recommend getting involved with your local government

Most municipalities have boards and commissions where citizens can serve and make recommendations.

Some city employees have good intentions but just don't have the time to research environmental issues to see which changes are feasible. Do the work for them. Most are receptive to reasonable suggestions.

I think there are others that I have belonged to at one time or another, plus numerous humanitarian orgs. But times have been tough, paying rent, keeping the lights on and food on the table take priority these days, and that is always iffy this past year ofr so, in fact, I might be living in the wilderness of Nebraska very soon...:(
