Phone Number for Biden: 12022245042
:puke:

I just got off the phone with his office!

:puke:

They got a big chunk of my African American "articulate" mind!
The phone answerer was polite but admitted that he had been receiving many negative calls.

He needs MORE Calls!

Please join me in letting them know what an insult he casually tossed at Senator Obama and ALL African Americans and ALL people of goodwill!

Biden on Senator Obama ..........

>On Obama:

“I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” he said. “I mean, that’s a storybook, man.”

But—and the “but” was clearly inevitable—he doubts whether American voters are going to elect “a one-term, a guy who has served for four years in the Senate,” and added: “I don’t recall hearing a word from Barack about a plan or a tactic.”

5. I called, was told that they are getting lots of calls about this & "trying to confirm".
My comment: Massa Biden is a racist & doesn't stand a chance. I certainly hope that a sincere apology is offered with that 'confirmation', along with a withdrawal from the presidential contest. We don't need another racist in the White House.

K&R! :hi: Thank you for posting this thread, goclark!

While I am not a huge fan of Biden's, I can't believe that he is that DUMB in 2007.

I would NEVER vote for him and will campaign to see that he backs out of the Race.
Kerry was on the news 24/7 and they ruined him for something that was no way like this "error."

We don't need another RACIST in the WH.

37. Open letter to LynnSin

Dear LS, I address this communication to you, in particular, as you've been one of my favorite Duers for YEARS and if I have a hope in hell of being understood by any member of this dominant community, YOU are certainly on the short list.

You declare definitively
"I've met Biden and racist he is not."

Reading your MANY wonderful posts throughout the years, I have concluded that you are a 29+ white female from Delaware who is SERIOUSLY on top of our deteriorating circumstances. I will tiptoe around your sensibilities as much as I can, at the same time I must be DIRECT. So do, please, take a deep breath if anything I write below at first hits your reflexes. Then I ask, that as a longtime "internet acquaintance," you do me the respect of considering my words carefully.

As a white woman, you do not really know what racism is. You are able to empathize with certain manifestations, as the power dynamic also affects women globally. Speaking as an "alpha black female" I am well-acquainted with the view and reality from the bottom of the totem-pole.

To really know if Joe Biden is a racist, you would have to be a born and bred American black woman. Why that? Many racists make "exceptions" for Asians, Latinas, Middle Easterners as they are "exotic," not all THAT dark and have "good hair" and maybe they even have a brain in their heads. Hell, THEY'RE ON MY STAFF!!! There is no worse "insult" to a white man than having a black woman publicly call his shit out. (HE is the father of my child). You may wonder why I focus on WOMEN'S perceptions and hopefully I can allude to that before I have to sign-off to go prepare my classes for tomorrow.

Here's the totem pole:

WHITE MEN

+MEN OF COLOUR

+WHITE WOMEN

WOMEN OF COLOUR

BLACK WOMEN

+ These two "groups" seamlessly change positions depending on the circumstances. Please note that in my perception, "men of coulour" DOES include black men and that the "categories" for women ARE different. Think: Patriarchy.

Racism is most accurately perceived by those affected by it. It is not just words, it's how those words are used, it's coded VERBAL and BODY LANGUAGE. It's the startle reflex if you get too close or the unspoken assumption that you're a "girl gone wild." It's noticing the difference of how those of different skin shades are treated. Having not grown up black in a white-dominated society there is NO WAY that you have developed the antennae to pick those signals up UNLESS you are identified by society as white and your beloved family members have darker skin. Even then your skills would be limited. But only THEN would you have the opportunity to witness firsthand the pain and humiliation of the "subtle digs" or the outrageous, pigeon-holing assumptions.

In America, the taboo for calling out racist behaviour and/or public expressions of bigotry is MUCH GREATER than the slurs or actions that prompt the observations. "Halfafrican" gets many :eyes: and protestations but as yet NO ONE is surrounding the studio DEMANDING the the messenger of HATRED be taken OFF THE PUBLIC AIRWAVES BECAUSE "WE THE PEOPLE" OF AMERICA FIND IT OBSCENE. If the black community were to do so you can be sure the M$M would characterize it as "Niggers running wild and loose in the streets."

Americans will criticize Germany on "free speech" grounds, that giving the salute and shouting "Heil Hitler" or denying the Holocaust will land your ass in jail. Having lived here for many years I SUPPORT THAT RESTRICTION. One is entitled to his own opinion but NOT to promulgate LIES.

Getting back to Biden. His careless expressions indicate a deep insensitivity to coded language. Indeed, his previous gaffes show that he is OBLIVIOUS to such. They also point to an attitude that the few black members on this board have clarified, over and over and over and over and over and over again, only to be confronted with disingenuous, semantic BULLSHIT.

My sincere intent is to foster a deeper understanding. My PM is open to you.

Yours in solidarity,

Karenina

9. I wonder if Messr.s Jackson, Sharpton, Conyer's et.al.
have chimed in yet. I belong to a generation that thought "white" was an attitude which we were proud not to acquire. I looked a long time for a "white" man until I discovered Johnny and Edgar Winters. "Hmmm" I said to myself, "Self, there might something to this racial thing." So then I went in search of a "coloured" man and bumped into Dick Gregory in search of a "flesh" colored bandaid; we compared notes, I showed him my pictures of the Winters brothers and we parted to continue our search with half of the mystery solved.

Biden, you are so screwned.

33. Yep that's the most outrageous of the outrageous words
Clean? He deserves to be marginalized and isolated forever. If he was a media person on TV his career would be completely over. Amazing. This is on par with what Trent Lott said that made him lose his leadership position.

Biden needs to locked in a room with the CBC for a day. Then they can introduce themselves as prior clean African-Americans. It seems that he missed them.

What a total moran! :banghead:

Edited on Wed Jan-31-07 12:31 PM by Carl21014
Isn't it possible he just choose his words poorly. You have to admit Obama has reached heights not before reached by an African-American as it relates to mainstream support. White Americans according to polls support him in unprecedented numbers.

Articulate was an unfortunate choice of words, maybe charismatic would have been better. Maybe he could have explained that America is more accepting of people of color than they have ever been before. Maybe he should have avoided the topic altogether because the pitfalls of saying the wrong thing are many.

But geez, lets not crucify a guy for a gaff.

If anything, he should not run for President because HE IS NOT ARTICULATE.

With the years of experience coming from a man of such privilege, he is an insult.

If he was stupid enough to make a comment like that about Sen. OBAMA,he should be a speech writer for the Chimp.

What may be "Mainstream" to Joe Biden is not "Mainstream" to my people.

He does not decide what is "Mainstream."

Take out the word "mainstream "and he is still saying that to be articulate/clean etc is a surprise from an African American!

Shame on him.

I just read another "remark" that he made about Middle Eastern people being well known. He had the nerve to say something like "there is a 7/11 on every block."

Edit for quote from flaming lib......

23. Polls determine what mainstream is!
If Jesse Jackson never got more than 5% of the vote in any primary he was never more than a fringe candidate. You have to be taken seriously by the majority of the electorate to be considered a mainstream candidate.

Until recent history African Americans have not been even considered as real candidates by the White Majority. Horrible as it may be, it's true!

Just look at what they did to Harold Ford in TN and it's still evident we have farther to go still.

Don't blame Biden for speaking the truth. If Obama isn't the first mainstream AA candidate then who was?

34. The only time anyone ever called one of my boyfriends "articulate"
was when my boyfriend was black. And of course the person who called him articulate was white.

Now don't get me wrong. He was articulate--as were the white men I've dated. But no one ever mentioned that the white men were articulate. That went without saying.

Sorry, but I can't find a way to give Biden the benefit of the doubt on this one. Especially when you throw in "clean."

35. The problem isn't with the gaff, it's that the opposition can use it
to define him. Once defined it's easy for them to sound bite him to death ala Kerry's "stuck in Iraq" botched joke. Nobody with an IQ over 40 could look at that remark and interpret it the way Republics did, but in the context of three years of defining him they could pull it off.

Edited on Wed Jan-31-07 01:31 PM by Carl21014
Did any of those candidates get enough votes to be considered mainstream?
I think alot of people expect history to be ignored as a means of PC. Fact is we have a history of racism in this country, and people of color not being considered as anything more than token candidates is part of that history.

Obama is truly the first mainstream candidate we have had. Colin Powell could have filled that spote but he never ran.

24. No need to be snarky.
No they were not mainstream but what they did was important in terms of historical merit and perspective. And they were democrats. If he wants to repair the damage his mouth has caused, it certainly wouldn't hurt to issue that apology to them as well as a nod to their achievement.

Changing subject: I called Biden's office and I wanted to encourage others to be nice to the staffers when they call. The staff is feeling the heat and it's showing. Please don't take your frustrations out on them. Make your point politely (we all know some on DU are incapable of doing so, but please try!).
