OK, that's not fair. Eight of them were prescribed burns. One was the Phoenix Fire near Crater Lake that has been burning for a month or so. Prescribed burns are nice for photography, because you are not worrying about pinpointing the location and directing the crews in to the fire.

However, there is a new fire near John Day, Oregon. Grass fire. They pulled some of our people off today to go to the Ochoco NF for that fire.

An Rx burn near Black Butte today (Mt. Jefferson on the right).

The "Hazy 44" burn (90 acres) lights off with the North Sister to the left.

Smoke from the "Hazy 44" burn (90 acres - on the left) and the "Hazy 50" burn (82 acres - on the right) merges.

2. Looks like several days of rain moving in.
The fire weather is calling for significant wetting rains in central Oregon Friday and Saturday. The USFS is closing one of the Deschutes NF lookouts two weeks early (on 9/25). I'm hoping they will close me early, too. Those last two weeks into October are pointless, and a bit scary with the winter weather.

3. There's always that one big storm in October to let you know fall's really started.
I remember one vividly when a friend talked me into hiking Marys Peak from Conner's Camp right when the front came in. It was... awesome, for the lack of a better word.
