How to make a whole bunch of people hate a whole bunch of other people.
First, define the group to be hated. Everyone else belongs to the hater group. Don't worry if the definition of the hated group, Group X, is superficial--it won't matter. It just has to be something they all have in common--who they date, how they pray, what language they speak, where they were born... You could even make it a fictional commonality, by, say, pretending that all people who look and sound a certain way are all from the same country and are here illegally, maybe.

Second, make up stuff about the hated group. It helps if you can find someone in that group who actually does the stuff you make up, but it's not critical. You can, for instance, claim that all people with a Spanish accent are from Mexico and are illegal and that they all smuggle drugs while having illegitimate babies fathered by men they decapitate in the desert. Or, all people who call their god by a certain name (Allah, Jesus, it really doesn't matter) are molesting kids or trying to blow up America. Maybe even claim they killed your god and stole your money. Don't worry if it doesn't make a lick of sense--go for the gusto!

Third, make the accusation. "All Muslims are terrorist!" For a lot of people, that's really all you need. They are like dry sponges, looking for hatred to soak up.

Fourth, make the accusation more subtle. This is a little harder, but well worth it, because it will take care of a lot of people who think they are more intelligent than the group you fooled in step three. Most of them are, but they can still be brought down to your level. Here's how: Watch the news--they are always willing to help. Find something someone in Group X did. Maybe someone crashed planes into skyscrapers. Maybe someone married a partner of a different gender. Or skin color. Remember, don't be afraid the reason will be too superficial. It doesn't even have to be bad, as long as you claim it's really, really bad.

Next (still step Four--I warned you it was harder, it takes two paragraphs): Subtly imply that everyone in the group does this thing that some of them did. If you can do this indirectly, it seems to add more power to the accusation. For instance, when reading a story about a a cute white kid going to an amusement park with his dad, say something like "Just like a white father, abandoning his kid. Oh wait, I guess not." See how clever? Everyone reads that and says "Oh yeah, I remember hearing Rush Limbaugh describe how black men all abandon their kids. This story proves it! I hate black people." Or reading a story about a Christian who solves a problem, say "Christians all over the world rioted, killing dozens. Oh wait, they didn't!" See? CLEVER!!!! Now people say "Oh yeah, I remember some Muslims rioting over cartoons and people were killed... something like that. All Muslims are touchy and violent!! This story proves it! I hate Muslims!" Gays, illegal immigrants, Catholics, Southerners... Pick a group. The sky is the limit!

Fifth, defeat naysayers. This is an ugly point, and I'm sorry to bring it up, but some people will just not hate when you tell them to. You must defeat them! Notice the exclamation point? Fortunately, this is easy. You just laugh at anything they say. Don't worry, it really works. For instance, when you say "Muslims all want to kill you and make you a Muslim!" (Nice work on that one! ), someone will point out facts counter to your argument. Don't worry, no one believes facts. But they still must be destroyed. Let's say they say "But, you can't say that. Islam believes in peace! Sure there are bad Muslims, just as there are bad Christians, but the majority of Muslims are just like you and want to live a happy life free to live as they choose. You can't claim they are all bad!"

Yes, it's true (sadly), and yes it's likely to persuade a few people if you leave it unopposed. But the solution is simple. Are you reading? Because here are the exact words to counter their argument:

SEE HOW EASY THAT IS? Oh, the profundity! It's orgasmic!! You may be tempted to expand, but for the moment, stick to the script. Those with more experience are able to enhance it a bit, saying, for instance,

LOL

or

Hold off on such sophisticated rhetoric until you are better trained though. These are powerful weapons, not for just anyone to use.

Now and then you'll meet a more sophisticated opponent who uses facts and logic and actually will not run away at the  solution. They will say something more complex, like "But, you can't say that all gay men are child molesters. There is no statistic anywhere which proves this. Sure, there are bad gay men out there, but there are also bad straight men, and bad women... Look at the woman in California who raped and murdered a small girl in that trailer park. If anything, gay men are less likely to molest a child, because they are more afraid of being accused of something so horrendous. Please, unless you can show me some proof that this is true, stop spreading hatred."

See what I did? CLEVER!!!! But it won't work with everyone. Some people might listen to logic, and even start stroking their beards in thought as they work out the other person's argument. You must act fast. Here's what you say. "Sure, some Muslims didn't riot, and sure, some Christians did riot, but overall you can't possibly expect us to believe that Christians are just as likely to riot as Muslims! We all know Muslims are bad guy rioting crazy types!" This isn't sophisticated, but it will stop a lot of beard rubbing.

IF that fails, go for the big gun. In this case, the BIG LIE. Don't worry about the capital letters, it's really easy to use. And it's a standard format that can adjust to everything. Here it is. Ready?

"Group X is required to (whatever you are saying they do). It's in their (whatever you can think of that they might all sort of listen to)!" Don't worry about fact checking. No one Googles anything except nude pictures of Katie Perry, anyway. Here are some examples.

"Muslims are required to kill Christians. It's in the Qur'an!"
"Gay people are required to molest children. It's in their DNA!"
"Women are required to want to look at men's packages in the locker room. It's in their hormones!"
"Catholic priests are required to molest altar boys. It's in their predilections since only child-molesting perverts would want to become a priest since the Church forbids them from sleeping with women (and altar boys, but again, they won't think of that)!" (Some are a little more complicated, but you can do it).

There you go. That's all. Soon you will be exposing all southerners as incestuous, ignorant drunks, and all Hispanics as lazy knife-wielding kidnappers with a penchant for eating brains (thus the decapitations, see?). It's easy. It's fun. It makes you feel really good, like you are better than people you aren't really better than. Try it. You'll like it!

And if you don't like it, you can come sit by me.

1. Interesting article.
Although I spent years fact checking.

I still don't have beer and travel money, and many good experiences, I should have beer and travel money, and many good experiences.

Those are facts within my observation, and able to be proven. And they have not been disputed by better thoughts, therefore, all other actions can be an expanse of those observations. If it is not correct and just for me, then there is injustice, and steps can be taken to correct many injustices. From there tracing back to core problems and looking at observational information, can create the needed corrections over a larger scope.

It does not need a thought of being better, nor would such a thought be just, and would hamper actions.

As far as clever, better to be foolish in some situations anyways.

2. With the obvious exception
Republicans, conservatives and other right-wingers really are all stupid and/or evil and it's the civic duty of every DUer to hate them...:sarcasm:

4. I think you just revealed yourself as a repub troll. jk. You are way to good at this "us" vs. "them"
stuff. Frankly I think you're wasting your time on a Democratic board, when you could be stoking fear and envy very effectively on right wing boards. ;)

5. To diffuse an explosive, one must understand the explosive.

It doesn't mean one has to love the explosive, though.

Yeah, Donald Southerland's role in Backdraft affected me. :)
