Avarice And Sloth In The Political Realm
Edited on Fri Sep-17-10 10:39 AM by Klukie
I like to observe and ever since I realized how much I love and loathe politics, I have been watching. I will state up front that I am a registered Independent who is an unapologetic bleeding heart liberal. My opinions refuse to be held hostage by any one party, plus I reserve the right to change my mind when reason allows. That being said, I have noticed a lot of things during my observations and one thing that is striking to me is the basic element of division between the parties. There is little doubt that most republicans do not see the value in social programs. There is also little doubt that Democrats do see the value of social programs. If we boil down the basic reasoning behind these feelings, I believe what we are left with is an aversion to avarice and sloth. Republicans tend to have the mentality that if you work hard enough that monetary success will be achieved (although they have varying levels of success). They seem to focus on ones ability to work as the quintessential factor in ones character. In other words, being lazy or the appearance of being lazy is the worst thing in the world to them. In a republicans eyes, social programs are viewed as a conduit that feeds the worst trait one could possess. Let's go to the other side now. Democrats tend have the mentality that working hard enough does not always bring monetary success. They seem to focus on ones quest for the dollar as a detrimental factor in ones character. In other words, being greedy is the worst thing in the world to them. In a democrats eyes, social programs are viewed as a necessary conduit in which to battle the worse trait one can possess. I guess what is most striking about this realization, other than the fact that we are a nation divided by human characteristics that are equally offensive, is that the facts show that avarice is most assuredly winning the battle.
