Poll question: GD: Do you DU at work?
Sadly, I'm guilty of this waste of my employer's time & resources, but I can semi-justify it as I'm social studies teacher and DU is a great source for finding out off-beat and undernoticed news items.

1. When I was working in an office, I did, but I justified it by finding breaking news on it a lot
quicker than I did on the wires; I worked at a newspaper.

6. I fit in a category between "significant time" and "not too often"
Edited on Sun Sep-26-10 07:24 PM by MindPilot
But seeing as I work at a defence contractor, I'm surprised I can access DU at all.

7. Other: I work for myself from a home office. I can do whatever
I like with my time. Sometimes I'm working. Sometimes I'm on the web in discussion forums. I have a very long work day. Self-employment means that I set the rules.

13. same here
I usually have it up when I doing my paperwork and when I need a short break or comedic relief, I flip to DU

23. Yup, self employed here too. I usually spend more time here on rainy days
or when I'm doing paperwork. As a parent though (my other job that I take as seriously), I sit and browse DU while my daughter does her homework. She and I sit at the table together and "work". I'm on the laptop and she's doing her homework so I'm available to help her, or we can look things up if she needs it. I find it easier to browse DU while she's doing homework since I can easily leave it to help her. When I'm trying to get through a work problem, I'm generally more consumed and unfocused on her so I try to keep it "light" while she's around.

29. Too many are out of work.
And too many, like me, are working for less money in order to keep a job, and prevent more lay-offs.

School budgets depend on state revenues. Our state revenues have plummeted; we've taken hefty pay-cuts over the last 18 months, and laid off about 50 people in my district. I don't know what my first check of the year will look like at the end of this week; new pay cuts start with the first paycheck of this school year, and our health insurance premiums are going up 30%. :(

And I'm grateful to still have a job.

...so my time is my own ...and surfing DU while an operating system loads on aother computer hurts no one. :) :)

24. No. I have a job that requires production.
There isn't a whole lot of idle time on a construction site. You have to be busy or you'll be gone.

25. Sadly? No, quite on the contrary.
I often have DU open in a tab on my browser during the day. When I'm holding on the phone or waiting for something to download, etc., I read a thread or two.

I'm allowed. I own the shop. :)

Every few weeks I actually get all caught up, and I may spend some of my down time on DU.

27. Never
I'm just too damn busy at work, if I have a spare second, I might check a weather report. I save my DU time for after work, or in the morning before I leave, with a cup or two of coffee.

28. Flat-out 'NO' isn't an option in your poll
In my company, the corporate IT manager prepares a list every Friday of all websites visited by employees with internet access and delivers it to the general manager (my direct supervisor) at each location. I don't want to shoot myself in the foot by doing anything that would suggest I'm anything other than a busy li'l beaver on company time. Besides, my boss is a fizzing-with-rabies RWer who has a subscription to Newsmax - the print edition (didn't realize such a rag existed until I interviewed for this position) - and leaves copies lying around in the lobby outside his office for perusal by all & sundry. I don't believe he would have a sense of humor about surfing DU on his dime.

30. Many times a thread will have a post saying something like "give more
info for us cube rats"

Leads me to believe many people "...Sadly, I'm guilty of this waste of my employer's time & resources, but I can semi-justify..." but they will attempt to justify it in various ways.

Theft is theft, whether it is "...employer's time & resources..." or actual money or things belonging to someone else.

31. Only at lunch, via my blackberry
Mainly because it is a pet peeve of mine at work to see half the staff on the computer while the rest of us take care of the workload.
If they are not on the computer, they are talking on their cells or texting. Right in front of management, no less..as long as a handful of us keep the work flow going, management is OK with them doing it. Upper management is trying to crack down on it but with lower management not enforcing it, it is not really working

33. I bought the collected Monty Python off Amazon for like 35 bucks last week.
All 45 shows, but a two-DVD vid of their 1982 Hollywood Bowl performance.

Something in my gut told me you might find that interesting.

34. I rarely have time, but if I did, I get so addicted to DU when I start
that I would surely be out of work in no time if I logged on. Once I get into it, I just can't quit.

I would be better off to play computer games.
