Autistic Modesto Boy Stabbed, Mother Detained

MODESTO (CBS13) ― A young autistic boy is in grave condition after being stabbed multiple times in a Modesto apartment Sunday night and police have detained the boy's mother.

Witnesses say the boy's mother, Anitra Hankins, was questioned then handcuffed while her autistic son was wheeled down in a stretcher.

"There's cops with their guns draw talking to the lady upstairs. She was covered in blood," said next-door neighbor Christopher Tooze. "He had stab wounds all over him, really bloody and a big stab wound in his head."

Neighbors at Ashwood Village Apartments say Anitra always seemed like a kind, devoted mother. They say she had to bathe and feed her son and give him medication daily because of his condition.

Autistic boy undergoing surgery after being stabbed in Modesto
By Kevin Valine - kvaline @modbee.com

A 13-year-old Modesto boy was undergoing surgery Sunday night after being stabbed multiple times, and police had detained his mother, authorities said.

The mother called 911 about 6 p.m. to report that her son was hurt but refused to provide further details, Modesto police Sgt. Tim Helton said.

He said when officers entered the woman's home in the Ashwood Village Apartments at 2800 W. Rumble Road, they found her son lying in the hallway with his feet bound by rope. Helton said the boy had been stabbed multiple times.

The boy was taken by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center and was undergoing surgery late Sunday night. Helton said the prognosis is grim.

He said the 13-year-old boy is autistic.

Anitra Hankins was detained and is being questioned by police, Helton said. He said the investigation is in its early stages, but "this is not believed to be a random act. This is not the attack of a stranger."

5. from the modbee article...
snip...
Hankins had served on the Area VI Developmental Disabilities Board, a panel that works to protect the rights of people with developmental disabilities and their families living in Amador, Calaveras, San Joa-quin, Stanislaus and Tuolumne counties.

She submitted a letter of resignation in June 2004 saying that because of her health and that of her special needs child, she could not continue her duties.

Hankins wrote that she would miss her work and that she had enjoyed her time on the board, her colleagues and the "wonderful opportunity to serve my community."

2. Tragic

"Until you walk a mile in another's shoes......" probably applies here. Great stress, worst of solutions. ;(

4. Very true. Not just in this situation, but many others that we read about, too.
We have no idea what happens in a person's mind that drives them to commit terrible acts like this against their own children.

3. When I see officials use air quotes when saying "autism"
I think of this.

Tragic. I've spent enough time close to the disorder to understand why some parents simply snap. My family is blessed that our son isn't as profoundly effected as some others.
