The best part of the walk was the end. I'd parked my car visibly |
|
beside an empty lot, right on the corner where the road split. The neighborhood was mostly an urban loop, the street curling around until it cut back into itself
A few times, here and there, folk peeked through the blinds when I rang but refused to answer the door, so I'd drop my lit under the mat and move along. But almost all reactions were friendly, and a good number were enthusiastic: Thank you! Please keep doing this! These people will be going to the polls to vote Democratic this fall
The sun is getting low and it's overcast as I amble back towards my car. A handful of local kids has appropriated the empty lot for frisbee
They greet me as I approach, so I figure I'll lean on them too: Are any of you sixteen? I ask. You can't vote until you're eighteen, but here in North Carolina you can register at sixteen. Then you'll be ready to vote twenty twelve
We already voted. We voted yesterday at school in the cafeteria at lunch one says
He means we registered. We registered yesterday at school says another
I'm glad to hear that I tell them. I hope you all have a good day
They hope I have a good day, too. I drive back to tally my numbers

Especially since you've got some real kooks running down thar in the Tarheel state. My folks live out in the mountains (Tryon) and I can hear their eyes rolling from 3000 miles away when I ask them about certain races.

6. This state is a weird mix. But I think Obama winning the 2008 D primary here |
|
may have worked some real political magic
