Rick Sanchez: Jon Stewart A 'Bigot,' Jews Run CNN & All Media

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/01/rick-sanchez-jon-stewart-_n_746764.html

CNN's Rick Sanchez made controversial comments on a Sirius radio show Thursday, calling Jon Stewart a "bigot" and saying that CNN and the other networks are all run by Jewish people.

Discussing Stewart with radio host Pete Dominick, Sanchez said that the "Daily Show" host has a limited worldview, and called him a "bigot."

The conversation began with Sanchez decrying "elite, Northeast establishment liberals" who "deep down, when they look at a guy like me, they see a guy automatically who belongs in the second tier, and not the top tier.

"I think to some extent Jon Stewart and Colbert are the same way. I think Jon Stewart's a bigot," he said. "I think he looks at the world through, his mom, who was a school teacher, and his dad, who was a physicist or something like that. Great, I'm so happy that he grew up in a suburban middle class New Jersey home with everything you could ever imagine."

When asked who Stewart is bigoted against, Sanchez said "everybody else who's not like him."

Sanchez would eventually retract the "bigot" claim, settling instead on calling Stewart "prejudicial" and "uninformed."

But he made a larger point when Dominick suggested that Stewart could understand being part of an oppressed minority group because he is Jewish.

Sanchez scoffed at the claim, snickering and suggesting that CNN and the rest of the media is run by Jewish people (from the "Stand Up with Pete Dominick" blog):

Very powerless people... (snickers) He's such a minority, I mean, you know (sarcastically)... Please, what are you kidding? ... I'm telling you that everybody who runs CNN is a lot like Stewart, and a lot of people who run all the other networks are a lot like Stewart, and to imply that somehow they -- the people in this country who are Jewish -- are an oppressed minority? Yeah. (sarcastically)

18. but bigotry stretched to include any other with whom there is a disagreement
When Stewart points out a disagreement with anyone, he is acting bigoted toward them.

Or so goes, Sanchez's thinking when asked what 'groups' Stewart is bigoted toward.

77. Stewart is doing comedy and satire--Sanchez is supposed to be doing
serious substantive news--so his use of the word bigot in so much as it is left dangling so as to apply to anyone who has a disagreement sounds pretty windy to me.

Comedy is supposed to be a little windy, no?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Sanchez

On December 10, 1990, Sanchez struck a drunken pedestrian, Jeffrey Smuzinick, with his car on a residential street near Dolphin Stadium, then known as Joe Robbie Stadium, and left the scene, returning two hours later.<3> Smuzinick was paralyzed and eventually died in an assisted living facility on November 2, 1995.<1><3> Sanchez had just left an NFL football game with his father when the accident occurred, and a police breathalyzer exam determined that Sanchez' own blood alcohol level was above the legal limit for driving. He was not charged with causing the accident, but was charged with and pleaded no contest to DUI.<3>

90. White Cubans "like" Ricky DID grow up (in Miami) FEELING oppressed
I know this from personal experiences with my own Cuban family.

They had a unique experience as "new" Americans.

My own family represented what Ricky meant.

My grandparents had two jewelry stores in downtown Havana..they had a "country home"..a city home.. a beach home and a farm where they had race horses.

My father & my aunt were raised with governesses and private schooling abroad. They lived a very "elite" lifestyle... When my aunt , cousin & grandparents came to the us in the early 60's they had NOTHING....They lived in subsidized housing, were on welfare for a short time, and DID feel very "oppressed", BUT they CHOSE to come here and were at the same time, GRATEFUL to be here, and were willing to start over in a new place, in exchange for freedom.

What they HAD in Cuba was TAKEN from them...IN CUBA.. They were offered refuge here, and they gladly accepted it, KNOWING that their lifestyle would be greatly diminished.

101. Those that fled Cuba when Castro took power were not the lower class folk.
but by and large the upper middle class and upper class landowners and wealthy business people.
They got rich under Batista, and knew they were doomed under Castro. The fate of the aristocracy after the
French Revolution comes to mind. Those that fled, wanted to keep their heads.

7. I think it is correct to now describe Sanchez as an anti-Semite.
I mean, this is straight and outspoken bigotry against Jewish people. It's not an "I misspoke" moment. This will not be covered with an "I apologize if anyone was disturbed by my comments" non-apology.

I think this guy just killed his career.

37. I kind of liked Sanchez
I don't watch TV, so I pick up links to clips here on DU, and I've found him to be fairly reasonable. I don't know his politics, but he seemed to come down squarely on the side opposed to stuipidity.

But he stepped in it with these remarks. You almost have to wonder whether he was paid for this, since it comes so far out there.

He's not struck me as a Fox-type, but you can be pretty sure that he's going to be leaving CNN, and the only other option is Fox.

8. FYI, the guy Ric ran down while DUI is still dead.
Edited on Fri Oct-01-10 10:23 AM by Billy Burnett
Miami: Ric left the scene to go home to slug down a couple more drinks.
The cops had to go to his house and return him to the scene ... too late to use a breathalyser cuz he'd gone home to drink after he ran the guy down.
No arrest. (Ric used to do a segment on the local Faux affiliate WSVN called "Crime Check", a VERY police friendly on-the-scene live segment covering local busts, robberies, assaults, etc.)

Ric has always been a shill for the extremist RW Cuban exiles and their minions.

Ricardo added the "k" to Ric --> Rick, to be more (his words) "anglo acceptable".

62. And public pressure made them stop his 'Crime Check' segment
because he seemed to only report black crime. Rick & the cameraman would go to the nighttime crime scene, with all the flashing lights of police cars (makes a dramatic effect for TV news), & show the victims talking with the police in the distance, or the covered body lying in the street.

Viewers didn't like it because it was either too morbidly gory or because he reported no other crime except black crime which the viewers thought was bigoted, especially this being when Miami was the coke capital & the cartels employed the Marielitos (1980 Cuban refugees) as pushers & enforcers.

Then he had some involvement with a woman with ties to a cartel. That's when they sent him to the Houston Fox affiliate.

I watch his show at 3 during the week. He tries to be fair - as he points out to the viewer - and though he's not as bad as he use to be, he still does have a big ego. No one can stroke his ego as well as himself.

But this thing with Stewart. Stewart was joking! I watched the show. I think Rick is just jealous, and feels diss'd by Stewart & Colbert. When he said on his show that he was going to help promote Colbert - well, Colbert made fun of Sanchez for being someone who might help bring an extra couple of people (or something to that effect) to the rally. That was pretty insulting to Sanchez, & I remember thinking at the time that Sanchez' ego wouldn't handle that diss very well.

:hi:

Seriously, I never heard of him until a couple days ago when he spouted off about Stewart.

Then earlier today I saw that he tried to take on Keith Olbermann:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/01/rick-sanchez-and-keith-ol_n_746607.html

Has he been around all along or did he just appear recently? It appears that he is trying to make a name for himself by picking fights with the big boys. It also appears that he is way out of his league.

Not only is he an asshole, but he is quite stupid too. Over the past few months he tried to (incorrectly) 'correct' petroleum engineers and geologists several times.

Rick Sanchez is probably as stupid as Glenn Beck, the latter of whom he will probably replace at FUX Noise after November elections.

93. No, I don't for the record,
but having followed Thomas' reporting over the years, she was pretty fair to Israel and allowed a moment of anger to get the better of her. (If you read the remarks in context, she was quite frustrated at Israel's intransigence). This in no way excuses her remarks, but I do not think she is a bigot at heart, though people can argue that the remark was "revealing". This is simply my opinion based on what I have seen, heard and read of her over the years.

Thomas' remark was also stupid from the bigots point of view, since the Jews in 1948 were trying to "go back where they came from". (For the humor impaired, this is not an endorsement of such views, merely an ironical observation).

A review of her career doesn't show any overt anti-Semitism (unless one considers any criticism of Israel to be anti-Semitic) and she was also quite critical of PLO terrorism and other violence against Israel.

I am NOT apologizing or making excuses for her remarks. They were wrong, and you must admit she was harshly punished. However, was the punishment just? To me a just punishment is applied the same in every circumstance, in this case it was not. Statements against Palestinians far harsher have been made repeatedly by various pundits, reporters and politicians over the years and no similar punishment was meted out.

Please understand, in my opinion what happened to Thomas is what SHOULD happen to EVERY pundit, reporter or POLITICIAN who utters such sentiments. But since the punishment is NOT evenly inflicted, the punishment becomes unjust. Jesse Jackson's career suffered badly because of his vile and bigoted "Hymie Town" remarks, yet Rush Limbaugh is still on the air, despite having said things just as bad, or worse, almost every day for going on two decades.

Sanchez should lose his job. I'm betting he won't, but would be very happy to be wrong.

Several entries cite the woman as the recipient of this gross act and, since we all have, um, "anuses", it's dumb.

I attribute that rather egregious "oversight" to an ugly drive many males have to demean women, as it could clearly apply to anyone.

Rick takes all the jabs Stewart gives him personally and again and again shows he's just a big baby. I'm sure Jon will have some choice commentary about this. In fact, he should invite him on The Daily Show to explain himself. That would be good TV.

If he did, I wonder if we would be hearing how what he said wasn't anti-Semitic, but "the truth" as was the case here with Oliver Stone's similar statement. We'd also be treated to "Jewish" DU'ers who are proud of the fact that 'we' really do run (own) the media.

95. Everybody who runs CNN is a lot like Stewart.
His comment is true IF he's not talking about everyone being Jewish. It means they come from an urban area on the east or west coast, and they come from a much more privileged background than those of us who grew up in working class families in the midwest or south. Most of them grew up in families who could afford to send them to the best private colleges. The class and regional biases in the corporate media are pervasive.
