Sharron Angle Accuses Harry Reid Of Helping Child Molesters Get Viagra

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/08/sharron-angle-harry-reid-child-molesters-viagra_n_756666.html

LAS VEGAS — In the ugliest ad so far in Nevada's contentious Senate race, Republican Sharron Angle accuses Democrat Harry Reid of helping to put Viagra in the hands of child molesters. The TV spot is the latest in a string of scare-tactic ads flooding the Nevada airwaves in the final weeks of the dead-heat contest.

Reid, the Senate Majority Leader, has portrayed Angle as extreme and crazy, using her own words and policy positions to try to undermine her credibility. But that strategy has not pushed him forward in the polls.

A recent wave of inflammatory attack ads has helped Angle remain steady.

"Want to know just how out of touch Harry Reid is?" the female announcer says at the beginning of the latest ad. "Spending $787 billion on a stimulus that failed is a start. Or Reid voting to give illegal aliens special tax breaks and Social Security benefits is another big clue. But here's the kicker: Reid actually voted to use taxpayer dollars to pay for Viagra for convicted child molesters and sex offenders."

The ad concludes, "What else could you ever need to know about Harry Reid?"

The vote refers to the federal health care law.

Before it passed, Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., proposed an amendment barring federal expenditures for supplying Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs to sex offenders. Democrats called it a political stunt aimed at killing the legislation. The amendment died.

The health care law does not single out convicted sex offenders.

Angle's campaign defended the ad.

"Harry Reid was so intent on passing ObamaCare that he was even willing to give Viagra to child molesters to do it," campaign spokesman Jerry Stacy said.

Previous Angle ads have claimed that Reid backed special benefits for illegal immigrants. Numerous reports have debunked the allegations, but the campaign continues to push it while boasting that linking Reid to illegal immigrants has swayed independents.

Reid spokesman Kelly Steele called the ad proof that Angle, "will do or say anything she thinks will help get her elected."

Reid was the first to go negative, unleashing a chain of cutting ads after Angle's upset primary win in June. But Angle, a tea party favorite and former state legislator, soon raised enough cash to fight back.

In other factually shaky ads, Reid said Angle supports sending jobs overseas and Angle called Reid the best friend illegal immigrants ever had.

1. That is disgusting.
I'd rather see child molesters put to death, they cannot be trusted, because they do not 'reform,' change or stop it.

13. Actually the recidivism rate is fairly low.
Among child molesters released from prison, only about 3.3 percent were re-arrested for another offense.

14. That doesn't mean that the recidivism rate is low...
Edited on Sat Oct-09-10 02:39 AM by CoffeeCat
It just means that if they molested, they weren't caught again.

Pedophiles who molest children are very rarely caught. If they're
initially caught, it is a rarity. Ninety percent of children never
tell. Pedophiles use very elaborate scare and terror tactics, to
manipulate their victims into silence.

So, maybe only 3.3 percent were re-arrested for another offense, as you
said--that but does not mean that they didn't re-offend. You can't
say that for sure.

Also, the only ways to track recidivism rates are through re-arrests, as
you said. Some law-enforcement agencies use "self reporting." So, pedophiles
are asked if they have harmed children again. What are the chances that
convicted pedophiles would be honest about re-offending? It's pretty
ridiculous to suggest that self reports from pedophiles are valid or
reliable--especially if admitting to more molestations would mean more
jail or prison time.

The fact is---that it is nearly impossible to measure pedophile recidivism
rates. And it is very bad science and statistics to suggest that just because
3.3 were re-arrested--that this means that the recidivism rate is only 3.3
percent.

17. If by your definition there's no reliable data, how do you prove your claims?
Where's your evidence to support the claim of a high recidivism rate?

...recidivism.

I never said recidivism was high.

I clearly stated that there is no accurate way to measure recidivism.

You were making the claim. A big claim, that the recidivism rate was 3.3 percent.

There's no way in hell to accurately measure recidivism, so claiming a very low recidivism rate
is baloney. As I said, recidivism is measured in two ways: 1.) Self reports from convicted
child rapists who will be put back in prison if they admit they re-offended, 2.) Data on if
convicted child rapists are caught again.

I'm not making claims about recidivism being high. You are making the claim that the recidivism
rate is 3.3 percent, and I'm telling you that recidivism measurements are inaccurate and flawed.

I mean, seriously. Most convicted pedophiles don't believe they have done anything wrong. They
often believe that minor children wanted to have sex with them, or even led them on. They live
in a delusional fantasy world. Their elaborate denial system (blaming the victim, suggesting
that they didn't "abuse", believing that the molestation wasn't harmful) leaves them unable
to distinguish fact from fantasy. Yet, you want to rely on their self reports--as a foundation for
valid statistics?

That's kinda nutty, don't you think?

19. I'm not making a claim, I'm stating a fact.

3.3 percent were rearrested for another offense. That's not a "claim," that's a fact.

Second, you're the one who leaped in to defend the idea that all sex offenders--not child molesters, all sex offenders--are automatically reoffenders and therefore should be executed. To say you're not trying to claim that recidivism is high is dishonest.

Third, trying to claim that by basing my argument on actual facts rather than an emotional reaction I'm somehow being pro-pedophile is not just pathetic, it's insulting to the entire idea of rational debate.

21. You're stating a statistic, not a fact.
And I'm trying to point out to you that the statistic to which you so tightly cling--is
based on a very suspect foundation.

Not every convicted perp who harms another child is caught again.

Not every perp who harms another child again will be honest when asked if they've raped again.

Recidivism rates are highly suspect and unreliable.

There's just no valid way to get an accurate reading on recidivism.

10. Because it's much better for your state not to have the leader of the senate
but instead a junior senator that is mean, stupid, lying about her true beliefs and most important not respected even by her own party. That sure will bring in big federal $$ to your state after the election. I think the fact a state might vote out the sitting leader of the Senate when the opposition party is generally not thought to be able to win the Senate mind boggling proof people don't know how the senate works. Particularly Republican voters.
