I have a friend whose daughter works for the Obama Administration. She's a nice kid, recently married, young & hopeful and wants to change the world for the better. Her job isn't a super high-up one, but it IS with one of the WH offices (though not actually IN the WH,) and we love hearing about it from time to time.
Having a drink with my friend tonight, she said "Do you know who called my Mom yesterday?"
Well, of course, we didn't.
"Vice President Joe Biden. My Mom was making tortillas at home, and the phone rang, and it was (friend's daughter) and she said, "Gramma, someone here in Washington wants to talk to you."
And it was, really, honestly, truly, Joe Biden.
My friend's daughter had been to a meeting at Blair House, with the Veep's staff, and the Veep stopped in to chat. At some point, the discussion turned to the importance of grandparents and other elders, in determining kids' futures. And my friend's daughter said enthusiastically that SHE had the BEST Grandmother in the WORLD!
And Joe Biden said, "I'd like to give her a call and tell her you said that." And so she whipped out her cell phone, where she has both Mom and Grandma on speed-dial, and hey, presto! My friend's Mom was talking to the Vice President of the United States.
Now, I always thought that Joe Biden was one hell of an impressive human being. And when I blogged the 2008 Democratic Convention for DU, I remember being moved to laughter and tears at the same time by how obvious then-Senator Biden's love and value for HIS Mom, in fact his whole family, was and how important they clearly were to him.
But that the VPOTUS would take a minute to just share a moment appreciating family love with a staffer, and make her Grandma's day, incidental to a meeting about something else altogether...
Well, damn.
I knew I loved the guy. Way to go, Joe.
Izzat cool, or what?
appreciatively, Bright
