Wal-Mart mulling options after Canada union ruling

* Saskatchewan Court of Appeal upheld union certification

* Case deals with United Food And Commercial Workers local

CHICAGO Oct 15 (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N), the world's largest retailer, on Friday said it was reviewing its options after a Canadian court ruled that a union properly won certification in a store in Saskatchewan.

On Thursday, the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal upheld the union certification won by United Food and Commercial Workers Canada Local 1400 for a store in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. The ruling struck down a lower court ruling in Wal-Mart's favor, according to the UFCW.

The certification had been issued by the Saskatchewan Labour Board in December 2008.

"We are reviewing the decision," Wal-Mart spokesman Andrew Pelletier said.

Wal-Mart has fought with unions in Canada before. In November 2009, Canada's Supreme Court backed the right of the company to close a store where workers sought to unionize, but said such closures might require the company to compensate workers.

Wal-Mart shares were down 11 cents at $53.14 on Friday on the New York Stock Exchange. (Reporting by Brad Dorfman. Editing by Robert MacMillan)

1. Canada has some balls and cares about it's workers. If they had been the United States, the ruling..
...would have been: "Fuck the Workers, lower their pay plus Walmart gets a big tax break and the CEO get a HUGE bonus"

10. -1 for unnecessary bitterness. We do have labor laws.
We can have unions here. That's a given.

13. I'm afraid "Can" and "Will" is far apart. I believe the Right-Wing has poisoned the ...
...populace on the idea of Unions. I love them and many others do but their power is sadly shrinking.

4. Yep, that is what I expect them to do
then use the closing to show other stores they loose their jobs if they vote for a union. They will use a "underperforming store" excuse.

6. I'd say fine - close the store but pay each worker $25k before
leaving Canada.

14. Too short. Give them $500k each worker and each government official
before leaving Canada.

That way, Walmart will return to the US much poorer....

15. I am so pleased. They tried to unionize in quebec, a liberal province, and Wal mart closed
down their stores. I am so happy Saskatchewan did what they did.
