German Chancellor Merkel Says 'Be A Good German, Adopt Christian Values Or Leave'
This all sounds a little too familiar.

Merkel says German multi-cultural society has failed
AFP

by Audrey Kauffmann Audrey Kauffmann – Sun Oct 17, 11:50 am ET

BERLIN (AFP) – Germany's attempt to create a multi-cultural society has failed completely, Chancellor Angela Merkel said at the weekend, calling on the country's immigrants to learn German and adopt Christian values. Merkel weighed in for the first time in a blistering debate sparked by a central bank board member saying the country was being made "more stupid" by poorly educated and unproductive Muslim migrants.

"Multikulti", the concept that "we are now living side by side and are happy about it," does not work, Merkel told a meeting of younger members of her conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party at Potsdam near Berlin.

"This approach has failed, totally," she said, adding that immigrants should integrate and adopt Germany's culture and values.

"We feel tied to Christian values. Those who don't accept them don't have a place here," said the chancellor.

3. Gosh, Ang, there was that little phenomenom called Nazism
that y'all Good Germans dabbled in back 60-70 years ago. Evidently the near complete destruction of your society didn't register with some of you.

6. Merkel ally quits after claiming Nazis didn't start war
This is an interesting story from last month. Know them by the company they keep:

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/merkel-ally-quits-after-claiming-nazis-didnt-start-war-2076379.html

In Poland, she remains Germany's most hated living politician. Her unashamedly revanchist political views once prompted a Warsaw news magazine to portray her on its front cover clad in a sinister, swastika-covered Nazi SS uniform.

But yesterday, Erika Steinbach, probably the last surviving bête noire in Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative government, took the first step towards bowing out of politics altogether after she started an explosive row over who was to blame for starting the Second World War.

Mrs Steinbach, 67, announced her formal departure from the leadership of Ms Merkel's Christian Democratic Party after enraging Germany's Central Council of Jews by inferring that Hitler's invasion of Poland in 1939 was merely a response to Poland's military mobilisation earlier that year.

"I am beginning to get the impression that you can't say what you want in Germany any more, even if one is talking about facts," is how the veteran right-winger responded to criticism from within her own party and its liberal coalition partners about her remarks. A Polish government spokesman said her comments were identical to " Nazi propaganda".

7. It takes a generation for immigrants to speak the language fluently
but the assimilation thing ain't gonna work. Immigrants keep their culture and most of their customs and after a few generations that actually enriches the country immeasurably. Times are changing the human dynamics as the mix changes all over Europe. They're having a hard time dealing with it.

14. I understand the concerns, totally, because it is Germany. But...
She's touching on things that make sense and no one here would disagree with.

And they are things that will get traction with the middle class. So we need to pay attention.

For example, when she says immigrants should "adopt" the "Christian" values of the host country, she claims to be saying that things like Sharia law and honor killings and forced marriages and genital mutilation will have to be left behind if you expect to be welcome here in our country. Now who would have a problem with that?

And insisting that the immigrant learn the language of the host country is a big "well, duh!" in the world of common sense. Host countries cannot be expected to support countless insular communities who never integrate and cannot support themselves because they never learn how to speak the country's native language. She makes a good point about the host nation not having a responsibility to carve itself into a bunch of mini-nations for the sake of its immigrants, only to have to support them when, because they remain insular, they cannot support themselves.

That said, given history and some of the possible "dog whistle" words in the rhetoric, there's a concerning possibility this is the foot in the door for something uglier.
