High school football player dies

A Spring Hill High School football player died early today after he became unconscious during a varsity football game Thursday night.

The senior student, identified as Nathan Stiles, was taken by life flight to the University of Kansas Medical Center where he died about 4 a.m. Spring Hill was playing Osawatomie High.

According to reporting partner KSHB-TV, a spokesman with Miami County EMS says they got a call to Osawatomie’s Lynn Dickey Field about 8:23 p.m. Thursday on a “traumatic injury.”

The district has not commented on the circumstances of Nathan’s injury.

Ron Stiles says he's not certain what caused his son's death. But he says Nathan had suffered a concussion in the school's homecoming game earlier this month. He said his son had been cleared to play Thursday.

Ron Stiles also says there weren't any malicious hits during Thursday's game.

7. More info
A near-record game near Kansas City Thursday night turned tragic Friday morning when a star running back was pronounced dead hours after he arrived at a hospital following an injury suffered in the game. Spring Hill (Kan.) senior running back, linebacker and homecoming king Nathan Stiles died Friday morning at University of Kansas hospital in Kansas City, just hours after his teammates finished off an astounding 99-72 victory over Osawatomie in the season finale for both teams.

While no official comment has been made on how Stiles suffered the injury, NBCActionNews.com first reported that a Spring Hill parent said Stiles intercepted an Osawatomie pass during the second period of Thursday night's game and suffered a hard hit. The running back reportedly made it to the sideline after the play but collapsed shortly thereafter.
