Just to be clear, if Ds hang onto either house, we are calling it a victory. |
|
If Ds hang onto both Houses, we are calling it a complete rejection of the R. point of view.
Right?

Both sides can't really be victorious. Just sayin.
So are the R's not victorious if they gain back a house?

7. Yeah, but based on the expectations of a R. blow-out... |

...and all the cash they spent on this, I'm thinking our ability to hang onto either house in an effort to stop a R take-over can legitimately be called a victory.

and it will be (for them), albeit IMHO a Pyrrhic (and temporary) one ultimately. I think that them capturing the Senate is going to be a far less likely outcome. O'Donnell's primary election victory pretty much closed THAT door for them- it would likely be considered "icing on the cake" if they win it but no big deal if they don't. Of course, neither side is likely to get anything substantive accomplished during the next two years regardless of the outcome IMHO.

Midterms are always a bitch for the Administration's party, and quadruply so in a time of deep economic crisis. Add in all the right wing corporate money that the Citizens United decision unleashed on these races and the general tenor of the election and I would posit that by maintaining our control of the Senate we've done as well as could be hoped.
Next -- onward to 2012 and a new opportunity.

They will spin it as such: "the Democratic Left squeaked by tonight, losing big in both the house and the senate. While the right wing has made up a huge amount of ground. While the Dems still control both houses, tonight will be looked upon as a huge loss for them".
The whole "we still control both houses" will be lost in the right wing talking point machine.

Suppose we lose at least one house. The simple fact of the matter is that no matter what, this Congress will be run by and for the best interests of Fox News - not the people, make no mistake about it. With a huge majority pushing the interests of this piece of shit network, I seriously hope their policies fail big fucking time, and it shows the world that the network should not, cannot, and will not run America. If America listens to this piece of shit network and votes with only its interests in mind, it will blow up in their faces big time.

the excuse the dems have been using for their 2 years of failure is that they didn't have enough votes in the senate. by their own standard, not extending that majority can only mean 2 more years of failure. the dems have to be held accountable for allowing the right to gain any ground at all, when all they had to do to achieve that was BE PROGRESSIVE instead of conciliatory.
one party, two branches.

How can holding on to the Senate be a victory? The Dems would have to lose 10 of 19 currently Dem seats up for re-election, plus every Republican seat in order to lose the Senate. They're expected to lose a net of 7 seats in the Senate. A loss of 7-9 Senate seats in one election is huge. Why call that a victory?
I think that a much better approach if we lose the House would be to admit defeat, evaluate the cause of it, and consider what to do about it.

If the Dems lose 75 House seats and hang on ot the Senate by a 51-49 margin, that will NOT be a victory.
Personally, in that instance, I'd rather give them both houses. Otherwise, their lack of control in the Senate will give them something to hang their hat on for 2012.
