Had to turn off Ed -- he's sounding like Limbaugh shredding |
|
Jon Stewart. It's making me angry. Taking his words out of context, saying Stewart is blaming cable news for the problems in America, pure crap. Ed's doing just what Stewart said, and what Limbaugh does, perpetuates the SCANDALS and takes everything out of context.
See ya, Ed -- you've done a lot of good and will continue to do so, but you're behaving like some egomanic whose feelings were hurt.

5. Stewart must have hit a nerve. |
|
I usually like Ed pretty much, but all of the cable talking heads might want to sit back and think about what Stewart was trying to say -- which was not that cable TV is responsible for all the problems, but that sometimes it amplifies differences beyond reasonable discourse. A TV show is more interesting if there's a lot of partisan ranting and name-calling, and sometimes a little righteous anger is appropriate, but what we really need is reason and facts. That's why Rachel Maddow didn't make it into the montage. She's reasonable and calm and she presents facts without polemics. We need guys like Ed and Olbermann, too -- and I don't think Stewart was presenting a false equivalence, since his montage featured about 90% right-wingers -- but sometimes we could use less heat and more light.

12. And Stewart never said he was. |
|
He was included in a montage of people making intense or even insulting statements. Stewart's point was that the cable news talking heads do a lot of that, and he included clips of Ed Schultz and Keith Olbermann. Because they do, in fact, use heated rhetoric sometimes. But the montage consisted of about 90% right-wingers. So the point could be made not that KO and Ed are "the same" as Glenn Beck (and I sincerely doubt that Stewart thinks that at all), but quite the opposite -- that 90% of the heated rhetoric is coming from the right.

28. I agree that was a false equivalency, but overall cable "news" is a cesspool of |
|
screaming dogs thinking they are journalists. There are only a few people who might fit the descripton of "journalist". The same goes for network and local "news".

9. Our nation has gone through a system of hyper polarization and the media.. |
|
perpetuates that process. The result is a government incapable of compromising to find solutions that benefit it's citizens.
Jon Stewart, by pointing out the complicity of the media on both sides, has offended people for the wrong reason.
We should be asking why isn't the media informing Americans and pushing the government to compromise for the benefit of it's citizens. It is not the relative fact content or the truthiness factor between Fox on the right and MSNBC on the left but the result of the way the media acts.
Predictably, many on the left have been deeply offended, and if we don't join in that offense, we are labeled members of the right.
The Media is broken, and that includes NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, CNN, and MSNBC. It serves a demographic to keep eyes on screen instead of pushing peoples voices to demand solutions.

The left right now is not one whit better than the right. We cannot expect this nation to survive such sharp divisions and polarized opinions in the absence of discourse. This nation is being shredded, ripped to pieces from the inside out.

I specifically remember Jon Stewart saying that Cable News did not cause our problems. But that it does create an environment that makes our problems harder to solve.
I think I agree with that analysis.
I like Ed and Keith OK, and honestly when Keith really started gearing up he was like the Fox antidote. But I prefer Rachel. While Keith goes for red-faced anger, Rachel goes for the sarcastic lighter touch, which matches my personality more.
To each his own, I guess.

27. Wow, Jon REALLY hit a nerve with all the media! |
|
It seems many shows and pundits weighed in on the matter -- the responsibility of media in today's political discourse -- today.
Them discussing their role and their responsibility -- even if it's whining or being offended -- is a huge accomplishment in and of itself.
The 24/7 corporate-owned media is tremendously harmful in different ways, IMHO. Jon pulled opened a door to discussion. Good for him.

When Ed first came to WWRL in NYC, I was disappointed as he replaced Thom Hartmann. Ed sounded so much like Rush that I found it disturbing. But I gave him a chance and he grew on me. He was great through the whole health care fiasco but lately has been just a bit much. I did not hear him today but I will side with Stewart on this one.
