Progressive Dems won because - surprise! - they represent districts where a large majority of the population is progressive. Their seats are safe. People in that district aren't going to vote for any Republican, ever. I am lucky enough to live in such a district.
The "blue dogs" lost because - surprise! - they represented districts where a large majority of the population is conservative. They won in '06 and '08 because people were in general fed up with Republicans and while they don't care for Democrats much, the Dems running at least echoed their conservative beliefs for the most part. But that left them most susceptible to a conservative backlash, which came on Tuesday.
