"Nancy Pelosi and her San Francisco values" |
|
This post is not about Nancy Pelosi or San Francisco.
It is about the long running right wing smear of the Democratic Speaker of the House and the way they tie it to a place, thereby smearing the place, too.
Hate and divisiveness. Sadly, it is effective.

1. I hate San Francisco values too... |
|
Such hideous things as LGBT rights, generous social spending, universal health care, separation of church and state. Who can stand such tyranny?

"A Folsom Street Fair in every playground!" :silly:
My Fox-watching retired military father came to visit me here once, and he repeatedly expressed his pleasant surprise at the large number of attractive women he saw. I think he genuinely expected gay orgies in the streets! I doubt the visit changed his political views, but at least it changed his preconceived assumptions about the city itself.

9. Nobody lives in San Francisco anymore, it's too crowded |

So, can we talk about John Boehner and his Cincinnati values? Cincinnati, home of Marge Schott? Or maybe we talk about golf and whether John can be bothered with Congress when there are three lobbyists in cleats standing at his door on a sunny day?

11. it's about appealing to emotions. republicans do it in an evil but effective way. dems don't try. |
|
we need to figure out a good (in both senses of the word) way to appeal to peoples' emotions. we don't need to divide, in fact, talking about being united as a nation and with all americans throughout the land and so on, we need more of that.
on the vast majority of major issues, americans side with democrats. but they vote for republicans because republicans know how to press buttons effectively. we can't cede this ground to them.
we have to fight back on an emotional level. that doesn't mean bashing cincinatti when they bash san francisco, but it does mean an emotional, not an intellectual response to an emotional attack.
talk to most democrats these days and they say they're democrats because the THINK the democrats have better IDEAS. talk to most republicans these days and they say they're republicans because the FEEL that republicans LOOK AFTER THEM or PROTECT them or HAVE BETTER MORAL VALUES. logic vs. emotion.
we'll always have the thinkers in the bag. and we can't win the voters who base their decisions on emotions if we appear wonkish, strategic, and aloof (even if that image is created by evil republicans).
we've won their minds. we need to win their hearts.

12. They have mastered the art of "demonizing" |
|
They say something over and over and twist it so that they sound like the good guy---evidently this works on the electorate.
