Getting sick of Cali and Mass thinking they are better progressives
It is much harder being a Progressive in a Red State. Even being Progressive in a Midwestern Blue State, like the one I live in, has more challenges. But we don't give up. I really feel for those in the Southern Red states and commend them for sticking it out when everyone is against them.

the Republicans just nicer.

I am thrilled for California (both of my brothers live there) and I hope to be a small part in turning Texas blue again, but I really don't think it's about jealousy. It was that ever so faint tinge of smug that sometimes rears its head on DU. :hi:

38. Understood, but it can easily be mistaken when worded like calling
people jealous. There are a good many people, like those who are in my home state of MI who are hurting over what has happened right now. :hi:

4. Yeah, Cali progressives are so great that the $20B annual deficit just vanished overnight
What a joke. CA has serious, structural issues. And if I hear "Prop 13" one more fucking time, I will just assume that someone has a plan to house all the seniors who would be foreclosed due to tax liens.

6. One can retain Prop 13 benefits for senior homeowners and still miitgate much of its budget effects.
Just an FYI for you: the buyer of the average priced home in California last year paid the equivalent of $2 per square foot in property tax.

Disney Corporation paid $.05 per suare foot for its California holdings.

Prop 13 MUST be reformed with respect to business properties. To NOT do so is the height of irresponsibility.

39. Then let's form a coalition to repeal just the corporate side
although we just saw Prop 24, which would have taken back $1.3B in corporate tax breaks, go down to ignominious defeat.

44. How about putting a dollar cap on the residenrtial side?
see, there are large generational mansions in California which are also getting out from paying anything like a fair property tax. Homes that have been in extremely wealthy families for many years, and which get around any property tax increases by being passed down to other family members. It's like an inheritance tax in reverse.

I think we need to do away with that, too, and only reserve the bennies of Prop 13 for the middle and lower income folk.

5. I like to call it being more effective progressives...
Edited on Fri Nov-05-10 10:43 AM by Ozymanithrax
Yes, California managed to come out a little bluer in this election, and Massachusetts more so. We do not have as many Conservative-small-government-give-me-something-for-nothing types cluttering up our system.

But if you want to make us Cali's feel bad, just remind us that Reagan was our governor before he was a shit-fuck-piece-of-trash U.S. President. It is our fault RepubliCONs have him to hold their scummy party together.

And look what Maxs did with Kennedy's Senate seat, they put a RepubliCON Centerfolder into the Senate. That will make them feel bad.

Welcome to DU.

What I wish for is for those who are on "top" to stop bashing us down South and pushing the "ignorant" memes. You don't like it? Fine, offer some solutions and encouragement for those of us who are proud voting liberals down here.

That's where the religious right started their insidious campaign. That's where we'll finally beat them.

33. Surprising how few people are unaware of this. This is something that
the Greens and Dem progressive groups should really, really be encouraging. I tried it, but I got seriously ill and had a family tragedy during the campaign and had to drop.

I'd do it again if I didn't have to do all the damn work myself, pretty much.

31. Yep, in the internet age, the reps represent ALL of us. So instead of bitching about the likes
of Rubio and McCain, get on the damn phone, jump in your car (it's lovely here in October), or at least send $
5 bucks to the campaigns before you whine.

THREE threads headed by "How can McCain be leading in Arizona?" this season alone. Bless their concerned little hearts...

You should be happy that CA (I really hate "Cali" as a state nick, seriously)leads the way and shows the way and supports the rest.

$160 million in ads on the wonderfulness of Meg by Meg
$30 million in ads on how Fiorina can fix CA by Fiorina
$20+ million in ads on how our air/water pollution standards need to be sacrificed for job
plus hundreds of millions on dollars of ads on behalf of the Republicans and for pro-industry propositions

We are not better progressives.
But thank goodness, for once, we were able to turnout the lying messengers.

40. Sometimes this board ignores the nature of our system
And talks as if it were a simple majority system.

Progressives tend to be in the cities and high population states, and that means they will always have fewer Senators. And instead of helping people in redder states they seem to trash them for doing the best they can.

Like you can turn rural red state people into progressives - that's a lot harder than it sound to someone who lives in the middle of a city in a blue state.

Keep on keeping on.
