He will always be remembered as making mistakes in Vietnam, of presiding over a divided country, with cities burning and people fighting in the streets...
And yet, he stood tall and strong and put his liberal convictions ahead of his political inclinations and adopted the Civil Rights movement, making what was essentially a northern urban and southern country colored problem that could be ignored into an American Problem that must be addressed by the nation.
He is a tragic figure, living under the shadow of JFK, a president who probably would have never taken up the Civil Rights cause as fully as his Vice President did.
Perhaps it took a Southerner to deal with what most in the country viewed as a Southern situation.
He put it all on the line because he felt it was the right thing to do.
How many of this generations politicians would ever dare to waste any political capital on those who are ignored and shunned.
Now, my generations political figures ridicule the poor, the down trodden, those who are too feeble to fend from themselves.
It sickens me that our country has been so reduced by the craven behavior of the Boomer Generation.
