Health NewsNews story inspires kidney donation

Man eases life of 1-year-old with rare disorder

November 10, 2010

BY JULIE MULLEN Courier-News

Remembering his grandmother who posthumously donated her organs to save lives, Chris Doing couldn't say no when he saw a toddler's face in the Elgin Courier-News.

On Oct. 25, Doing donated his kidney to help Nathan Saavedra of Carpentersville.

"The story motivated me to get involved," recalled Doing about the articles, which started running last April.

Nathan, who will turn 2 on Nov. 20, has the rare disorder Prune Belly Syndrome, which affects the urinary system. Without a kidney transplant, he would have once again been put back on dialysis. Prior dialysis had caused Nathan to develop severe infections, but without it, his kidneys would have failed.
