Here Comes Shuler: NC Dem Set To Make His Leadership Bid Official This Weekend

November 12th 2010

Rep. Heath Shuler (D-NC) is setting the stage for an official challenge to Nancy Peolsi's bid to lead the Democratic minority in the next Congress. Shuler, a moderate from the North Carolina mountains, will make his intentions official on the national stage this weekend, The Hill reports.

Shuler pitched himself as a moderate alternative to Pelosi as leader of the House caucus before she officially announced her run for Minority Leader in the next Congress.

Now, with most observers thinking Pelosi has the position locked up, Shuler appears ready to make good on his promise to take her on.

He "is scheduled to address his leadership plans during appearances on CNN's 'State of the Union' Sunday and MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program on Monday," The Hill's Mike O'Brien reports.

Even Shuler says he's the under(blue)dog in a battle against Pelosi for House Democratic leader. He told one local paper in his district that "it is probably a race we can't win."

Speaker Nancy Pelosi hasn't announced whether she'll retire, continue to serve in Congress, or even seek a leadership role in the next Congress, but already one of the House's most conservative members is trying to undercut her. Rep. Heath Shuler (D-NC), who dodged the shellacking on Tuesday, says if Pelosi makes a play to be Minority Leader, he'll run against her.

"If there's not a viable alternative -- like I said all along -- I can go recruit moderate Members to run in swing districts," Shuler said. "In that situation, I could do it better than she could, and that's what it's going to take. It's going to take moderate candidates to win back those seats."

On the campaign trail, Shuler said that if Dems held the House, he'd challenge Pelosi for the Speakership. His argument is that Democrats will have a hard time recruiting candidates in swing districts with Pelosi leading the caucus.

Pelosi's not expected to run. But if she does, Shuler's positioning himself to pull a Harold Ford -- particularly after the whipping his Blue Dog caucus suffered on Tuesday.

7. It's from the 4th and states that Pelosi is not expected to run
Pelosi has since stated that she is running which would impact the plans of others who intended to run for the position.

Former Terrible NFL QB May Run Against Nancy Pelosi

".....Well, one ultra-conservative Blue Dog who's technically a Democrat may, if that counts. He's North Carolina Rep. Heath Shuler: Inexperienced backbencher. Legendarily shitty NFL quarterback. Democratic party savior?

Shuler, who just won his second third term, told a local newspaper last week that if nobody else would run against Pelosi, then he'd bravely assume the challenge. This was before Pelosi somewhat surprisingly announced that she would run for minority leader, so Shuler maybe thought that he'd never have to follow up. So will he make good on his pledge now? We'll find out in a few days, when he plans to say something on teevee.

If Shuler does run, expect the outcome to be... hmm... what's the proper term here?... oh yes: expect the outcome to be Nancy Pelosi ripping his balls off and keeping them in a pickled jar on her desk, forever.

It would definitely be possible for a different moderate or conservative Democrat, one with some standing and Washington know-how, to knock off Pelosi. But Heath Shuler? He's been in Congress for less than four years, during which time he's voted against most of the major pieces of legislation brought forward by the party he now wants to lead. Effective party leaders, historically, have been the ones who don't want the other party to win.

And most importantly, look what happened the last time Shuler was put in charge of a major Washington institution: 13 touchdowns against 19 interceptions, and a wasted third-overall draft pick. Learn from your mistakes, Washington.

16. So he runs
The Democratic Caucus votes. He wins or he loses. Nothing lost except ten minutes of the time that the caucus meets. BFD.
