I mean REAL low. Sorry I didn't get a good enough look to see what model they were. I THINK they was ours. :scared:

Maybe 60 or 80 feet over the Verizon and BB&T buildings

9. Aha! Could they have been F-22A Raptors?
Edited on Thu May-24-07 01:15 PM by KamaAina
We had a close encounter with them during the wee wee hours last week. Guess where they were headed???

http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007705150338

Eight Air Force F-22A Raptors that some residents complained were extra loud when they took off early Friday morning followed a normal departure route and did not stray over land, a Hickam Air Force Base spokeswoman said yesterday.

Some Waikiki-area residents complained the departure by the first wave of four was the loudest jet noise they had ever heard. One thought a plane was going to crash....

Kalohi said the F-22A Raptors from the 27th Fighter Squadron, which stopped at Hickam en route back to Langley Air Force Base, Va., create about the same noise as the Hawai'i Air National Guard's F-15 fighters that are routinely seen training over Honolulu.

But the F-22A fighters were fitted with external fuel tanks and had orders to be back in Virginia before sunset, requiring the early-morning takeoff, Kalohi said. The extra weight required a "maximum-thrust takeoff" with full afterburners, Kalohi said.

Oh yes, by "early morning" they mean three A.M.! :grr: Trust me. I tend to wake up every hour or two overnight, and I was awake at three that morning. I could be considered a "Waikiki-area resident", being less than a mile away. I've never heard anything that loud -- not even when the winds shift and they flip the flight patterns so you do hear commercial jets flying over town.

edit: And why was it so all-fired important that they be back in Va. by sunset that day, even at the cost of waking up the entire island?! And now this... :tinfoilhat:

12. I understand only too well
We live in Annapolis and as part of Commissioning Week there is an air show by the Blue Angels. A day or so before they do a practice run, so we get them flying over the house so low that you can count pilot's teeth (ok, slight exaggeration, but not by much) for several hours. Then there is the day of the air show, so we get them again. Then on graduation day, they do a flyover of Navy/Marine Stadium at just about ground level - as in if you are sitting on the side of the stadium that they fly over, you get showered with droplets of JP-8 fuel. Generally, if the day of the practice is a Saturday or Sunday, you can count on several fender-benders clogging the roads because tourons (combination of tourist and moron)take their eyes off the road to watch the pretty planes and miss the curve in front of them or the car or the bridge embankment. The dogs detest it and spend most of the time they are flying over huddled next to each other and as close to a human as possible.

15. Once Saw A Fully Armed B-52 Fly Over South Miami At No More Than 300 Feet
Obviously in trouble and obviously on its way to Homestead (which was about 10 miles down the road). The cold war was not over yet and if memory serves well we kept about a third of our nuclear arsenal in the air at all times during those years.

While I was at Camp Lejeune years ago, fighter pilots used to buzz the beach near Cherry Point sometimes.

23. My son saw the Blue Angels yesterday in Annapolis
I'm sure there were a lot of people who saw planes flying over their houses who thought we were under attack. I don't think any enemy planes would get a hundred miles near our coast.

Everybody in the downtown hi rises gets freaked out by those low=flying planes and helicopters. They're supposed to warn you if they're going to do that sort of thing just for fun.
