My career (what's left of it) is in a field where you spend a lot of time around wild animals, venomous snakes, and the like. And, we rarely carry any sort of weapons to protect ourselves from these "scary, scary" creatures. There are very, very few conservatives in my field. The conservatives I do know can't understand how I could spend days on end in a cottonmouth-filled swamp without wearing armor. It's always, "I could never do your job."

It's the same with everything else. If it's unknown to them, it's scary and they piss up their panties over it. Libruls, scary, scary black and brown people, people who speak another language, or practice another religion, spiders, snakes, you name it.
