A moment of silence, in rememberance of JFK

John Kennedy's 1960 campaign for the presidency was the birth of my political awareness. His assassination will forever haunt me.

1. I can still tear up at the thought.... and I was only 5 at the time...

First time I had ever heard Barber's Adagio for Strings was when played at his funeral. I never cease to cry when I hear it.

when he was assassinated. The teachers at school were crying.

4. I was thinking about that earlier. I remember to this day exactly where I was when I heard the

news over the PA in school. for a moment, I was convinced that someone had gotten hold of the intercom and was playing some sort of sick joke.

14 when he was slain.

Then the Beatles came over a couple months later.

7. I was in the University of Alberta at the time..

and when we heard that Pres Kennedy had died the microbiology professor just would not go on...

Our classes were dismissed.. and we were all heartbroken.

I wasn't quite 14 when he was murdered, but I did feel this way - that I had lost a friend.

I think all of us (or most of us) realized that he saved us from a nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and gratitude for that can't be measured. For the same reason, the military hated him even more for that. Because of their attitude, I think ending as it did was inevitable sooner or later, I don't think there's anything he could've done about it or any way he could've prevented it. The die was cast, so to speak. All for standing up for the peace of the world.

If any haven't seen it, "13 days" is a very good movie on the missile crisis. That was a very, very, scary two weeks let me tell you. We all expected to be nuked at any moment, and we weren't far from it truth be told.

We owe JFK a lot. And MLK, RFK of course too. They were truly leaders.

12. I think of the horror that Jackie Kennedy experienced as well.

Besides seeing her husband blown apart in front of her eyes, she was neglected at the hospital, had to endure a fight over moving her husband's body, and was asked to stand next to LBJ taking the oath. (she was called out of the bathroom on the plane and responded "it's the least I can do".

She did all with grace and strength.

I can't imagine the pain she endured.

13. We did not imagine the horror that day...

It was right there in our lives, taking him away from us...

I lived in a Catholic dorm then (sophomore in college) and our priest had a requiem mass for him in our little chapel...

Standing room only...

I will never forget it.
