One of the requirements of being a writer is the ability to quickly gain expertise on the subject matters you cover.

Author James Riordan has covered a variety of subjects in the 29 books he has written. Rock icon Jim Morrison, Academy Award-winning film director Oliver Stone and the genocide that took place in Rwanda are among the topics the Limestone Township resident has tackled.

But the subject of his next book, the 2004 murder of 3-year-old Wilmington resident Riley Fox, contains an issue that Riordan knew something about the moment he accepted the assignment. That's why it may be his greatest challenge yet, and perhaps his greatest success.

Riordan is teaming with attorney Kathleen Zellner on the book, tentatively titled "Injustice (The Murder of Riley Fox & How the Police Framed Her Father for the Crime.)'' The pair are also involved in plans to develop the story into a motion picture.

This one hits home as Wilmington, Illinois, is only about 20 miles from where we live. And yes, while I was reading the newspaper accounts of this crime as the investigation unfolded I was completely convinced the father had killed his little girl.

We seem to have a need to find someone, anyone, guilty of these crimes. And sometimes we do not stop to think what the ramifications might be if we are wrong.

TG, originally from Illinois

2. I'm from Joliet
I'm originally from Joliet. This entire case was disgusting to the core. There was an almost identical case in Zion, Illinois, where a father (Jerry Hobbs) was framed for the rape and murder of his 8-year-old daughter. The police/prosecutors fought the DNA testing which eventually exonerated him.
