AFL-CIO warns about recount fundraising scam

21 November 2010

ST. PAUL - The Minnesota AFL-CIO has learned of at least one union retiree being contacted by a caller from an unlisted number in Anaheim, California (area code 714) fraudulently claiming to be the Minnesota AFL-CIO soliciting funds “in support of Dayton Recount.”

“Neither the Minnesota AFL-CIO, National AFL-CIO, nor the Dayton Recount are soliciting individual contributions from union retirees,” said Minnesota AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Steve Hunter. “We are working with the proper authorities to uncover and stop this potential scam.”

The targeted retiree reported being asked for his credit card number. Hunter urged anyone targeted to not provide any personal information and call the Minnesota AFL-CIO immediately at 651-227-7647.

The Minnesota AFL-CIO is a labor federation made up of more than 1,000 affiliate unions, representing over 300,000 working men and women throughout the state.
