Church of England bishop suspended over royal wedding comments
Pete Broadbent wrote disparaging posts on Facebook, one of which spoke of the 'nauseating tosh' surrounding the event
Riazat Butt

A Church of England bishop has been suspended indefinitely following his disparaging remarks about the royal wedding.

Pete Broadbent, a suffragan bishop in Willesden, wrote a series of posts on Facebook, where he said the marriage of Kate Middleton and Prince William would last seven years and described the wedding day as being surrounded by "nauseating tosh". "We need a party in Calais for all good republicans who can't stand the nauseating tosh that surrounds this event," he wrote.

His comments incurred the anger of politicians and fellow clergy, with the outcry forcing him to apologise for his language, which he described as "deeply offensive".

But his apology failed to appease his superior, the bishop of London, the Right Rev Richard Chartres, who said he was "appalled" by Broadbent's comments. In a statement today he said: "In common with most of the country I share the joy which the news of the engagement has brought. "I have now had an opportunity to discuss with Bishop Peter how his comments came to be made and I have noted his unreserved apology. Nevertheless, I have asked him to withdraw from public ministry until further notice.

BISHOP BROADBENT'S FACEBOOK COMMENTS

(a)  I don’t care about the Royals. I’m a republican.
(b)  History: more broken marriages and philanderers among these people than not. Count them up, back through the ages.
(c)  They cost us an arm and a leg.
(d)  Talent isn’t passed on through peoples’ bloodstock. The hereditary principle is corrupt and sexist.
(e)  As with most shallow celebrities . . . they will be set up to fail by the gutter press.

In a reference to the 1981 marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, he adds: ‘I managed to avoid the last disaster in slow motion between Big Ears and the Porcelain Doll, and I hope to avoid this one too.’

1. Really...

I'm Canadian and pro-Monarchy because our electoral system is so shit that I don't think we'll come up with something better to elect a head of state. I'd rather QE2 than some Tory fuckwit becoming President on vote splitting or whatever garbage system we come up with. We're too stupid to fix our electoral system, so we're too stupid to come up with a good way of electing a head of state. Besides, I like having a head of state with no real power (beyond that which she holds in Lyndon Larouche's mind); it allows us to criticize those who hold power all we want without some national pride gestapo calling us unpatriotic.

That said, I don't have any love for the Royals and I think that as Broadbents go, Peter is as wise as Ed and ought to be lauded.

4. Don't get confused by his usage of the word 'republican'

It's really just a code word for "anti-monarchist". Even some parts of the left have advocated abolishing the Monarchy.

5. True, but the last time England tried that...
...they wound up being governed by Oliver freakin' Cromwell, who was a rather heartless sort. Just ask the Irish.

9. I can't really argue with points A through E
He embarrassed himself with the "Big Ears" and "Porcelain Doll" remark, but other than that, his points make for an interesting discussion.
