1. Read them again. Then, take them to your local library, and the library will sell them to raise

3. If they're fairly new, try a used book store. They will give you credit
towards the purchase of new/used books at their store. Otherwise, you can donate them to a local library. Then, there's always garage sales.

16. Research and ask some questions about the used book stores
Some will buy your whole lot an only keep a few they think are sellable, throwing the rest in the garbage.

19. The one we use will only accept books less than 2 years old.
He is a "known liberal" and doesn't want anything he can't sell. He had an Obama sign in his window during the last election cycle.

6. The library usually takes used books.
They'll either add them to their collection or sell them at an annual fundraiser. Also, hospitals, Goodwill, etc.

Bookcrossing is fun if you want to track where your used books travel:

7. I take all mine
to the library or to a thrift shop. When my Mom was alive I kept her in reading material from the local thrift. She liked paper backs.

20. Most (if not all) jails won't accept hardcover books.
They're afraid the inmates will make weapons out of the covers. They also will will not allow many subjects, like crime related books.

12. Too many books here; help!
Edited on Tue Nov-23-10 11:02 AM by northoftheborder
This a good idea. (the Bookcrossing link) I am a saver. Of everything. Especially books. I love to read, and loan or give some away to friends and family. I have culled my shelves and even registered to try to sell them through Alibris. A year ago. However, I can't seem to actually list them, so there they sit, in piles. Help! I know I can give them away to the library, I don't know if, or how much, one can get from selling; So this is another interesting idea that appeals to my sense of the value of actual printed books, made of paper. (I haven't gone into the Kindle yet, maybe never will.) Thanks.

paperbackswap.com

also:

bookmooch.com

Assuming books are decent condition, of course.

Saves me a TON of money.

I'm not sure how it works exactly, but I know they buy books. I've been meaning to bring in a few boxes of books I've been wanting to get rid of.

18. Does a near-by Library have a Friends of the Library and a Book Store?
Call and find out. Ours recycles used books (resells) and finds homes for all
books (donates to homeless shelters, Senior housing, hospitals, etc.)

23. A friend had a used book store...
he made a couch out of them.... a work of art.

He also burned them. In his woodstove. A 3yr old romance novel that's beat up has no place to go, so he heated his store and house with them.
