Christian Right goes into utter denial mode over recent comments by Vatican on condoms
Just remember, these guys want to influence the government to have a renewed focus on social conservatism, but yet their own perception is so flawed that when an influential religious leader says that condoms aren't all that bad, they actually go out of their way to spin it to say that there is no change in policy, or (the usual thing) that the "liberal media" either twisted or made up the remarks entirely.

"Many conservative Roman Catholics aren't buying the Vatican's explanation of the pope's comments that it can be morally acceptable to use condoms to prevent the spread of HIV.

Some American conservatives say they will only accept a more formal pronouncement from Pope Benedict XVI. Others question whether the papal spokesman accurately quoted the pope.

He did not suggest using condoms as birth control, which is banned by the church, and said condoms were not a "real or moral solution" to the AIDS crisis.

But the pope's spokesman Tuesday did confirm a shift in Benedict's outlook."

Some of the things the Christian Right leaders are saying (Paraphrased):

"THERE IS NO CHANGE IN POLICY!" and "The pope really meant that (What *I* think he meant)."
- Cardinal Burke, who is on record saying that war and social support for the poor are "iffy", but that abortion and keeping brain dead people on life support indefinitely are absolute issues

"Even though there is a book written by the Pope on the subject and even though there have been several announcements on the subject as well, we still need more clarification on it. *sticks fingers in ears* Lalala! I can't hear you! I can't hear you!"
- Jenn Giroux, executive director of Human Life International America

"People in the newspaper that reported this need to resign! Heads must roll!"
- Philip Lawler, editor of Catholic World News and one time Director of Studies for the right wing Heritage Foundation

This is a great way to have a change in the House, by having the people who will try to influence the new Congress having their eyes close shut, with hands over their ears, and going "This is not happening. This is not happening."

We definitely need more Christian Rightists to come out on this subject.

1. Of course they will pretend not to hear the Pope when he said
All countries should provide Health Care for their citizens.

2. If the Popes are infallible then why have they changed positions so many times?
I know this isn't directly related to your good post but I've always wondered about that 'infallibility' thing. When a Pope changes the rules that means all the 'rules' before that were bogus. This isn't an attack. I'm just curious how anyone can justify this.
