Molly Ivins left us with a final request, let us honor it

We are the people who run this country. We are the deciders. And every single day, every single one of us needs to step outside and take some action to help stop this war. Raise hell. Think of something to make the ridiculous look ridiculous. Make our troops know we’re for them and trying to get them out of there. Hit the streets to protest Bush’s proposed surge. If you can, go to the peace march in Washington on Jan. 27. We need people in the streets, banging pots and pans and demanding, “Stop it, now!”

Those are the final words of the final column Molly Ivins wrote for us. I have to wonder if she knew this was going to be her last column and she wanted to leave this message to us as her last dying wish.

Molly has done a great job raising hell for so many years, and we can not allow her hell raising to stop now. Her body may have died, but we can keep her spirit alive and well if we honor her final wishes. She asked us to speak out and raise hell every single day until we can stop this war. Let us honor that dying wish, let us all commit to doing one thing every day to stop this war. That could mean standing out in the streets with a sign, it could mean writing your Congressperson, it could mean posting something on the internet which expresses your views, it could be talking to a friend about the war, it could mean posting a flyer in a coffee shop, it could mean whatever you want it to mean. If we all work together and do at least one thing however small to express our opposition to this war our combined deeds could do a great deal to build momentum for the anti-war movement.

To the Editor,

As our military, under the leadership of President Bush, prepares to send another 20,000 of our servicemen to Iraq, I wanted to educate the supporters of this fiasco of a few things.

1. The government has been actively calling up soldiers and Marines from the Individual Ready Reserve. The Individual Ready Reserve reflects the time that the soldier remains available to call up after their active duty deployment. Depending on their MOT, some of these soldiers can be called up 10-20 years after their active duty days are done. There are multiple cases of these soldiers being retrained out of their area, redeployed for a year, and killed and wounded. These soldiers are not being deployed so other soldiers can rotate out, but rather to supplement the troops already there.

2. The 20,000 soldiers being sent are nowhere near adequate. Visualize a quarter of Cowboy Stadium trying to tamp down Dallas and Fort Worth. It is yet another recipe for failure from a failed leader.

3. The word “veteran” was not mentioned in the President’s State of the Union speech.

At the same time, our wounded and sick veterans are having to fight for their health benefits now, with backlogs and denial of benefits. Twenty-five percent of all homeless are veterans while 70 percent of Iraq War veterans become divorced. The problems will only escalate as the president’s war continues to suck our treasury dry.


The Bush Administration prides itself on supporting our troops. How do these practices support our troops? How do they support those men and women who have given their all for our country, including my father, son, and uncles? Do YOU support these practices? Are you willing to sacrifice your loved one for this fiasco?

I have a really old pot that my mother-in-law gave me years ago that she used for her boys when she cooked. I think the think is steel and I have a big (not wooden spoon as I'm afraid with my enthusiasm I would break it) metal spoon to beat the hell out of it with. Talk about noise and being heard all the way up Pennsylvania Avenue.

42. One more thing with the pots. For those of us that can, scan in a picture

of Coulter's head, print it on anykind of paper that peels and sticks. Put Coulter's face on the bottom of the pot but be sure to beat the side of the pot so as to show the picture of Coulter's face. Could do the same with "IMPEACH BUSH," and many other sayings we can come up with. Beating some since into Ann Coulter would be a good one or the same with Cheney. "Beating the most hated man in America" and have Cheney's face on the bottom.

You all may think this is dumb and that's okay. I've had worse criticism; however, I'm going to make some of them up.
