Sarah Palin's 'snuff film' has animal rights groups angry (Video & DU the Palin poll)

By Melissa Bell

Though viewers are falling faster than bludgeoned halibuts (the show's ratings dropped by 40 percent to 3 million for Sunday's show), "Sarah Palin's Alaska" still has more than enough viewers to stir up controversy. Animal rights activists are up in arms over Palin's treatment of a halibut in the latest episode.

In Defense of Animals has called the footage of Palin clubbing a halibut to death a "snuff film." Alaska fisherman groups beg to differ, saying it's actually a humane technique to put down the large fish, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

The former vice presidential nominee took to the seas with her daughter Bristol (off from a night of dancing, I presume), where she tells the camera, "stunning the halibut may seem a bit harsh to some, but it's the safest and most humane way to harvest these massive fish."

Some people are having a little trouble finding the video. Here it is: http://tlc.discovery.com/videos/sarah-palins-alaska-mother-daughter-bonding.html

FULL story at link.

Poll questions: Should TLC have shown the clubbing?

Yes, it's a show about Alaska. They do this in Alaska.

If you want to protest it, give up eating halibut.

No, it is a violent image and celebrating cruelty to animals is just wrong.

Seriously? Another Palin post? Find something else to write about today, Bell.

Is this the face of a killer?

1. Has Obama signed the 'crush' video ban yet?
If he has then the video of killing the fish might (?) warrant charges :)

5. Will I continue eating Halibut knowing this? Yes. Does Sarah Palin deserve to be singled out for
harvesting fish in a traditional way? Of course. She deserves every bit of ire directed at her. Showing these images on her "reality show" was idiotic, unless she's just looking for trouble.

7. As an occasional fisherman I see nothing wrong with rapping a fish on the head
I do think there is something a little strange about appearing to take such glee in doing it however.

A person's attitudes toward animals often mirrors their feelings about their fellow human beings.

10. Correct. Killing fish for food is OK by me. I used to do it. Now I buy frozen halibut
and have someone else do it for me. Beating a halibut to death is still better than putting your little miscarried brother or sister in a jar and passing it around.

11. agreed. though vegetarian, i can understand the need to eat meat.
what i, like you, couldn't countenance, was the obvious enjoyment this borderline sociopath displayed while clubbing all those frenzied fish - just for the sake of boosting her personal popularity with the regressively reptilian segment of the population.
kind of goes with her mayoral record in alaska, when her town was billing rape victims for their own rape tests.

9. I despise Palin for many, many reasons, but as long as I am willing to eat fish,
Edited on Wed Nov-24-10 08:19 PM by tblue37
including halibut, I can't fault her for stunning the fish the way they are typically stunned when caught. I would rather fault her for all the truly terrible things she does. I don't think this counts as one of them.

12. Bristle is old enough to know how big halibut are. Obviously, she's never done this
until the cameras came and she was pushed into that boat. The Palins are in it just for the ride anyway. Bristle is as dumb as a sack of potatoes. Sarah is even dumber for allowing that kind of question on tape.

15. No, I'm sorry. She didn't do anything that many others haven't.
She does enough awful crap w/o this tempest in a tea party pot.

I didn't see the show but did see a short segment where the halibut gets clubbed and I could have sworn it's edited so that you nevver actually see the club hit the fish. I might be wrong, but I figured she either squealed and went all girl on them at the last minute or she clubbed the poor critter so hard that the boat sank.

But I do love some halibut.

21. "...give up eating halibut" - Thank you. Lightweight criticism is a gift to Palin.
You have to work pretty hard to outstupid Sarah Palin. Whoever objects to the inhumane treatment of fish has achieved a nearly unattainable goal.

22. The most disgusting part wasn't the fish killing
The most disgusting part was Sarah and (Bristol?) on this working boat, fully made up, pretending to harvest halibut, then while they were getting hosed off claiming "this is what we do in Alaska."

I'm sorry, but any woman who actually works in the Alaskan commercial fishery goes to work looking like a LABORER, not a TV STAR!

24. According to witnesses, a stunt double was used for the "fishing" scene:
"...while in Afognak, witnesses say that when Palin arrived at the boat there was a Hispanic man in it. She refused to get in with him saying she could not afford to be photographed with someone who might "be an illegal."

During the fishing scenes, she did not know how to operate the rod and reel so for the close up shots they had to bring in a stunt double.

As some point she flipped out of the side of the boat. While being pulled back in, she called a man a "PR _ CK."

25. Just watching that halibut flop around the deck
And watching everyone just OMG AHHHH IT'S SO AWESOME for a minute until they finally kill it...

God, if you HAVE to kill an animal, AT LEAST do it quickly and don't let it suffer like that.

What an evil bitch.
