The REAL Reason Dems Backed Down on War Funding - They Aren't Prepared to Impeach
Edited on Thu May-24-07 09:36 PM by Crisco
Bluffing only works in poker; if you get called, you're only out of cash. With no hope of a veto override, Senate Democrats were called, they had nothing, and they knew it.

The person who leads - or rules - is the person (or entity, in our case) who commands a nation's swords. In the Iraq War vote, congress declined its ability to command by giving that power to President Bush. They passed it over like a hot potato.

We cannot bring the troops home unless or until we remove Bush and his puppeteers from power. Like it or not, he commands the swords. If Democrats were prepared to take an impeachment vote, they would have Bush up against the wall. Domestic spying, the Hatch Act, Rove/Plame would be enough.

Have I said I'm finally off the fence on impeachment?

1. I have been thinking that line of thought too....
With Cheney now going bat shit over Iran and Bush's statements today - you know they have to be thinking IMPEACHMENT is the only answer to ending this mess. Are they giving him more rope to hang himself? If so, have they weighed the balance with the lives that will be lost in the mean time? I've been thinking this since the whole pile of cards came crashing down, do they have something else going on in the background? And if they do, please GOD, let it be IMPEACHMENT.

2. They didn't have to override his veto -
they should have let his veto on the original bill stand.

3. I think if we attack Iran...
then impeachment is going to happen. Here's the dilemma though...Bush is obviously stalling for something. Maybe time, maybe for the next Rethug to steal another election (I pray to God not). A hypothetical 2008 attack on Iran would put the Dems in a bind because it would take too long to impeach him before he leaves office anyway. You also have the 2008 election in full swing and several caucuses will be over by then. I can't see how this Congress will stand by while he attempts to invade another country. I've said this before though, we're going down a dark path...and the Dems may regret not acting sooner if Bush turns into Darth Sidious or something...lol.

6. They'd Still Have to Come Up With Step Two
We cannot strand the troops with no funding. Another bill would have to be crafted, one that funds them or one that brings them home before the money runs out. Only impeachment can get the latter passed.
