Senator Scott Brown supports repeal of DADT

Brown backs 'Don't ask, don't tell' repeal
By Michael O'Brien - 12/03/10 01:13 PM ET

Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) said Friday that he would support doing away with the military's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Brown broke with most Republicans to say he endorsed the findings of a Department of Defense report this week that recommended doing away with the military's ban on openly gay and lesbian service members.

"Having reviewed the Pentagon report, having spoken to active and retired military service members, and having discussed the matter privately with Defense Secretary Gates and others, I accept the findings of the report and support repeal based on the Secretary’s recommendations that repeal will be implemented only when the battle effectiveness of the forces is assured and proper preparations have been completed," he said Friday in a statement.

The statement lends key support to doing away with the ban, especially from a lawmaker who had long served in the Army National Guard.

Still, it's not clear whether Brown will break with other Senate Republicans, who have vowed not to let other legislation proceed in the chamber until other tax and spending issues are addressed first.

1. I'm not surprised...Mullen made Poopypants McLame look like the hate-filled
senile old goat he is...Brown knows if he sided with Poopypants, he loses.

2. I don't think the holdouts can stand long against the Pentagon brass
For once, on this one issue, it is an advantage to have hawks rooted in republican administrations making these recommendations and forcefully urging Senators to act to repeal. Of course McCain looks foolish. The folks he's spent a lifetime sidling up to have grown past him.

Which means, they can stall the thing FOREVER!

Meanwhile, one of Scott Brown's crazy, violent Teabagger base will feel betrayed by this and seek second-amendment remedies.

4. the Pentagon report is mostly a guide to implementation
They won't be able to use that as an excuse not to proceed.
