Obama the Acquiescent - Is there anything left?
Moving forward, what's left for the President to accomplish?

I don't need to make an exhaustive list, but I no longer see how he can possible deliver on any promises at this point. At least not anything that would be recognized as a core value of the Democratic party.

At best - if he did a total 180 - he can be a goalie, blocking the most vile of Republican legislation with a veto pen.

Climate change legislation? Forget it.
Judicial appointments? No way.
Education? Not seeing the avenue for that.

That tax cut bonus for the wealthy is going right back into the ads for the 2012 election. Goodbye fragile Senate majority, goodbye White House.

Would any cheerleaders who are saying, "I'm still fighting" please share your vision here?

2. Folks should have thought about that when they were advocating
Edited on Mon Dec-06-10 10:26 PM by FrenchieCat
staying home, not working for the party, not donating, etc.....

in fact, same folks threw in the towel months ago,
and actively started working to benefit the Republican party.

I'm still fighting the Republicans,
and many, many other are as well.
Like REP. Elison said today,
he ain't gonna do what the Republicans wants....
cause he ain't that stupid.

We, those of us who support progress,
even when it comes too little, sometimes too late, sometimes in fits and starts,
no longer have the time to fight with those who are no longer sane,
and who do nothing but complaint on these boards....and I mean NOTHING,
except to pretend not to want to understand how congress works,
and have decided that there ain't nothing this President can do
that will help this country.

3. I was looking for something substantial.
Can you think of anything the current President can accomplish in the next two years?

This deal announced today does his re-election prospects far more harm than anything ever written on DU.

4. This deal of letting the rich keep a bit more money
Edited on Mon Dec-06-10 10:42 PM by FrenchieCat
was not Obama's priority. It was the Republican priority. We lost on that.

The priority of making sure that the unemployed continue receiving their check?
that the middle class didn't all of the sudden see a giant tax increase?
that the struggling would continue to get a tax break via lowered payroll taxes?

Those were the President's priorities. He won those things.

If you can't figure out who is looking out for the lesser of thee,
I cannot help you.

7. (sigh)
"The priority of making sure that the unemployed continue receiving their check?"
A clear loss. Had he gotten as much time for unemployment (24 months was it?) he could have legitimately claimed limited success.

"that the middle class didn't all of the sudden see a giant tax increase?"
You do realize the tax increase mantra is a republican standard, not a democratic standard, right.

9. And that talking point really only works if all of the unemployed got an extension.
2 million will, 4 million (99ers) will not with this deal.

10. We're BORROWING money so they can "keep a bit more money".
That debt goes on everyone's back, so this is no favor to middle-class families.

5. Education?
I sure hope that doesn't get done with what he wants to do. He basically wants to privatize education with charter schools and wouldn't the GOP love to have a Democratic president do that for them?

6. I can only hope that he has an epiphany.
I really really hope that happens.
