The moderators are very busy at the moment
so I thought I would post a quick reminder of how you can make their lives easier.

1) Blunt, even harsh criticism of President Obama and the Democrats is permitted here. But as angry as you may be feeling, try to avoid using crude insults to describe the President, such as calling him a bastard, or an asshole, or saying "Fuck Obama," because the moderators will have to go and delete your post.

2) Post messages about the issues, not about other DU members. You all know personal attacks are not permitted, and if you're wondering why the moderators aren't deleting every personal attack on the message board it's because THEY CAN'T KEEP UP. Please do us a favor and stop personally attacking one another.

3) The same thing goes for OPs about other DU members. If you start a thread about DU members, the moderators will likely have to go and lock it. So please don't do that.

4) As I mentioned, you are already permitted to criticize the Democrats in harsh terms. But there are limits. Calling Obama a "Manchurian candidate," suggesting that he should be impeached, or comparing him to Hitler, goes too far and might even get you banned. If you look around you'll see that we are permitting plenty of strong criticism. Don't feel like you have to one-up everybody else.

5) If you want to vote for a third party, that's your business. But please don't bother posting about it here, because the moderators will just have to go and delete your post.

Thank you for listening. We are all trying to muddle through this as best we can. Now please carry on.

EarlG
DU Admin

PS. If you want to know more about the DU rules and how we enforce them, just click "Alert" on this post and you'll see a list of rule violations. If you click the little (?) next to each one you'll see a broader explanation. Do me a favor though and don't click the "Submit" button or you'll completely defeat the purpose of this post ;)

30. I concur
I basically offer non-stop harsh criticism of Obama. However, I try and temper it within the rules. I think the mods have been doing a far better job lately than in the past where much of my harsh criticism was deleted/locked.

So, carry on criticizing the President! Just don't call him or other members names. And don't call for voting third party. It's completely useless. More effective is calling for a Democratic party primary challenger.

Edited on Tue Dec-07-10 02:35 AM by bleever

Cuz I see plenty a carryin' on already, and to any real commonsense conservative who values the sweet smell of freedoms's feet walkin' that frontier-leanin' path, "carryin' on" is what, also, our forefathers who so valued those key values that make us who we are, not the inside-the-beltloop pundits and establishment elites, but the real carriers of that, that freedom that is who we real Americans really are, at the end of the day.

(Thank you and good luck, Mods.)

39. I'll bet - you've got some very disappointed and angry folks on this board.
I trust you know it is not Mr. Obama or anyone personally that we are angry at. We are staring at policies we can't believe are coming out of a democratic white house.

This is just continuation of the tax cut, I suspect it will get worse with the social security cuts coming up.

The most positive thing I can come up with is that I'm happy the unemployed won't be on the street this Christmas. That is a good thing. Other than that things are looking pretty grim.

58. I had a thread locked for saying I may stay home in 2012
Because I stated I wouldn't vote for a Republican in 2012, and if my choice was between a Republican and another Republican that I would be staying home. The mod locked it and said if I am supporting a third party to do it on someone else's bandwidth.

I mentioned nothing at all about a third party. Is stating I will not vote if i don't like my choices considered supporting third parties?

I know the rules and cant see that this very popular OP broke any rules.

And another thing, telling me "thanks for understanding" when I sure as hell dont understand, is condescending.

Repeated personal attacks should get a poster banned. That would take care of a vast majority of the problem posters. It is easy to disagree on policy without resorting to personal attacks. If the goal is civility, ban the assholes, no matter their politial position. It really is that easy.

79. Concerning 4 and 5 on your list.
4. "...you are already permitted to criticize the Democrats in harsh terms. But there are limits. Calling Obama a "Manchurian candidate," suggesting that he should be impeached, or comparing him to Hitler, goes too far and might even get you banned."

This is a vague guideline. One problem with this guideline is that it assumes, perhaps by virtue of the dignity of the office and the D after his name, that Mr. Obama is entitled to a minimum level of respect regardless of what he does in office. For me, Obama's Bush tax cuts compromise is hostile to everything that the Democratic Party has stood for in the past and should continue to stand for in the future. This plan would not be countenanced coming from a Republican, and can only be viewed in a harsher light coming from a "Democrat." The bounds of acceptable commentary should be adjusted accordingly.

5) If you want to vote for a third party, that's your business. But please don't bother posting about it here, because the moderators will just have to go and delete your post.

I don't want to vote for a third party, but I want the Democratic Party to maintain a progressive set of policies. I don't want to leave the Democratic Party but I will not accept a party which keeps the name but ditches the principles. If I say that I will not vote for Obama again, but that I will vote for a progressive instead, I do not think I am leaving the Democratic Party. It is leaving me. I hope this is within the guidelines.

So, you are saying that by refusing to throw the economy under bus, Obama is intentionally being "hostile to everything that the Democratic Party has stood for in the past"?

Isn't that kind of a harsh accusation? Can you really say that you understand the pressure Obama is under and that you would have acted differently in his shoes?

I think handing my wallet over to an armed robber is hostile to everything I have ever stood for. But if the criminal had a gun to the head of my son, I'd hand it over in a second and would not apologize for doing it.

Look, friend, there is such a thing as a tactical retreat -- it's about living to fight another day and/or protecting others from being victimized in order to save your own pride.

Is it criminal that the Republicans pushed things this far? Yes. But look at it this way: In six months, this will seem like ancient history. On the other hand, had unemployment benefits been cut off, had taxes gone up for the middle class, if the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1,000 points, had the economy started to move into a double-dip recession -- and all of that COULD have happened -- the impact could have been felt for years.

Let the bastards have the wallet. We live to fight another day.

taken your house, your health care, your bank savings, your retirement, and now he wants your daughter. You cant deal with terrorists. They will be back for more and more.

Also, the tax cuts for the middle class is only a band-aide and will not cure the economy. It may help the current mini-bubble but your son is gona die.

Also, dont fucking mention the Stock Market as a measure of the economy. It is a measure for only the wealthy.

You are willing to yield our children's future to "live to fight another day". But you wont fight today. The next time they put a gun to your son's head, you will less capable of fighting. And eventually, when they are thru with you, they will shoot your son anyway.

YOU CANT DEAL WITH TERRORISTS. STAND AND FIGHT NOW, TODAY, BEFORE WE ARE ALL DEAD.

114. Ummm... where to start?
Edited on Wed Dec-08-10 01:20 PM by LuckyTheDog
First off... I really think the GOP is more like a street gang than a terrorist group. Terrorists have a mission. Like any gang of thugs, I think the Washington Republicans are basically out for themselves. They are looking to grab all the "bling" they can get for themselves and their friends. Buy, hey, I say potato and you say "poTAToh."

As for the stock market being meaningful "only for the wealthy," that's just simply not true. Have you looked into how many non-wealthy Americans have 401(k) plans and IRAs? A big percentage of American households -- maybe even a majority -- have part of their wealth invested in the stock market.

Maybe you really would have been willing to forgo the unemployment benefits for other people in order to show your dedication to raising taxes 3 percentage points on high incomes (even if that's never going to happen this year). That's very brave of you. And perhaps you also would be willing to stand firm while the retirement savings of other people took a nosedive. I guess that makes you braver than Obama. Good for you.

To say I am brave to be willing to sacrifice anyone is just mean. What ever you think about the Republicans, you should recognize that they are literally using blackmail. There is not only no guarantee they will keep there part of the "bargain", there is, IMHO, no fucking way they will keep the agreement.

Re. the Stock Market, I didnt say that the American people didnt use the market, hoping against hope to earn a decent payback, I said it isnt a fair indicator of the health of the economy. It tells nothing about the millions out of work. In fact, the market tends to go up with unemployment. As the middle class suffers the wealthy thrive.

We need jobs. Tax cuts wont get us jobs, it only puts us farther in debt.

Edited on Wed Dec-08-10 04:04 PM by LuckyTheDog
... is that it's easy to talk about standing tough if you are not among those depending on those $320-per-week unemployment checks. I've been there -- recently. I know how it feels.

If you want to gamble, gamble with your own future -- and not that of people who are one missed car payment away from being unable to even LOOK for work.

As for the stock market rising when unemployment goes up... that's nonsense. There is no such correlation.

I totally agree with you about the tax cuts, though. I'd like to see the taxes for the wealthy raised to what they were before the REAGAN tax cuts. And I have been pressing my congressman to propose a new Civilian Conservation Corp. to put people to work.

However, the options start to narrow if we move into a double-dip recession and social unrest starts to become a problem. That's why I think Obama pretty much had to make this tactical retreat. I just hope the tactic pays off.

Edited on Tue Dec-07-10 11:49 PM by defendandprotect
or as we can all see from this fall out today we are going to be in a

post-Democratic Party era --

ONE wants to vote for a third party but 28 million expected voters stayed home

this past Election Day because of fall out over Obama's letting them down on the

economy and universal health care --

Economistis told Obama the stimulus - most of which went to business -- was only 25%

of what was necessary!!

Meanwhile, Obama made back room deals with Big Pharma and private Health Care Industry

to keep Medicare from being able to negotiate on drug prices -- and to keep single-payer

"off the table."

I'm sure this is unpleasant for the mods -- but it is even more unpleasant for Democrats

who voted for Obama watching what is going on --

and for 99'ers who are now without unemployment benefits while tax cuts for the rich are

kept in place by Obama
in yet another -- well, you can't even call it compromise --

it absolutely has to be recognized as more pandering to GOP, sad to say.

101. It's identity crisis time.
Both for the Party and for DU. My point was that I think Obama's compromise offer represents a sea change. He is a "Democratic" president who is now openly governing as a Republican in vitally important ways. We can ditch the man or ditch what the Party has always stood for. I don't think the two can coexist. A Democratic Party that follows Obama on the Bush tax cut extensions will be a party that has neither my support nor my vote.

In a parliamentary system I would be supporting a no confidence vote. Right now, I think it might carry in DU. I certainly hope so.

105. Well, DLC-corporate wing influence over the White House and DLC/Rahm having
been taken into the WH by Obama are definite signs not only of a "sea change" but

of a beginning steps in a very wrong direction!

The appointments of Summers, Geithner created immediate shock --

These are the people who pushed for the deregulation which paved the way for the

crimes which brought about this new crash of capitalism. These are also the people

who profited from it -- Paulson and Bernanke, as well!

And Act III they are the people who have been resisting any real response or remedy!!

Also agree that Obama has been "governing as a Repug" -- and I will add in very

destructive ways for the nation and citizens.

The point is that the DLC-corporate wing has so poisoned the party that it is difficult

to know how much of the original Democratic Party is left? Is there enough left to save?

Or, can we pick up what is left and cart it off with us . . . leaving the corporates behind?

And I very much agree with your conclusion ... Dem Party members who support this are not

either going to be members I will support.

We can ditch the man or ditch what the Party has always stood for. I don't think the two can coexist. A Democratic Party that follows Obama on the Bush tax cut extensions will be a party that has neither my support nor my vote.

Specifically re Obama -- I think it would be healthier for the future of the party to ask him

to announce he is stepping down in 2012. LBJ felt pressured to do it -- why not Obama?

That still leave us with two more years of this to deal with --

and I think he should also be pressured to let the advisors go.

I'm also guessing it's pretty clear that today's fall out is pretty much a

"No Confidence" vote re Obama!!

Next question is ... Who do we really trust -- ?

I'd love to see us draft Sen. Bernie Sanders -- who could run on the Dem ticket --

Hell, Sanders is a better Democrat than many of our official Democrats!!

and maybe Grayson --

Maybe Michael Moore -- he's also a Dem -

We need some release from this madness and the madness is partially contained in our own party. Yes, the D's and the R's certainly contribute legislatively. 100. Awesome!!!
Finally some civility and maturity. When a person has to resort to attacking someone while or not addressing the topic at hand it clearly shows their inability to communicate intelligently. The same goes for the " I'm right you're wrong and nothing you can say will change my mind attitude". Avoiding the issue is the worst. some folks may not be the best spellers or good at sentence composition but never the less they do vote and if you get down off that high horse of yours and realize that it takes patience and some effort to understand even Huckleberry Finn then maybe, just maybe, you will grow up a little. Good show its about time!

This is not an attack on DU members it is an attempt to persuade some to make this a better place.
