A small quibble
Recognizing that John Lennon was an icon for a generation, something in me objects to hearing his murder referred to as an assassination. Influential though he may have been his loss was not on a par with that of JFK or MLK or RFK.

2. the word is accurate
being a politician is not a requirement

Rachel Maddow hosted a special about the assassination of Dr. Tiller. Are you are saying that it is an inaccurate word in his case also?

It was an assassination, pure and simple.

3. Yes - it was the fact
that he was a public figure that made him a target.
That idiot thought he would impress someone by killing a public figure with some stature.
