Quick question Re: the John Edwards "$400" haircut, and the old video of him combing his hair...
I was talking with my Mom and sister-in-law last night, while watching Maher, and wondered... What the hell is a political candidate supposed to do? If you try to groom yourself to achieve the necessary aesthetics to be acceptable as a candidate, you're excoriated. If you don't, you're ridiculed as too unpolished, rough, or lacking charisma.
I'd love to see someone put together a video mashup of political pundits ripping on Edwards' haircut and grooming video (and any other similar attacks against other politicians, regardless of party), and other video clips of the same pundits criticizing politicians and candidates for superficial flaws. (e.g. Gore gaining some pounds, Kerry looking "French", Tsongas, etc)
The media needs to get its act together, or it may get the hook.

1. Yes, it's all very silly |
|
I'm no Edwards fan, but knowing the 18 months of media nonsense ahead I wouldn't consider a $400 haircut an unsound investment. I might shop around first, but I assume he did.
Time to focus on the policies. That's what should determine the America of 2009-12, not media drivel.

4. I Don't Think He Shopped Around |
|
I think he asked a member of his staff to arrange a haircut. The member of his staff did, likely contacting one of the best salons in LA. Now, most of us go to the salon rather than have the stylist come to us. And if the stylist is a little overbooked or busy, we sit and wait. Based on the busy schedule candidates often follow, driving across town and waiting on the stylist wasn't really an option. The request was for the stylist to come to him and to possibly wait - to accomodate Edwards's schedule. The stylist deserves to be compensated for travel expenses as well as the time waiting. That's all factored into the $400.
Price was probably not discussed up front. That's mind boggling for most folks - but you know the saying "if you have to ask, you can't afford it?" Well, I guess the opposite is also true, "If you think you can afford it (and you "need" it) - you don't ask"

2. Combing His Hair is OK |
|
$400 haircuts and 28,000 square foot palaces are something else. And a half-mil for advising a predatory-lending hedge fund really speaks for itself.

3. Like, Obama's Beach Picture |
|
There were some snarky remarks about his bit of flab around the middle. Like - oh my gosh, Obama shares a physical characteristic with a typical (gasp) middle aged man.
Why was that beach picture even published? He's not really a celebrity for all his "rock star" popularity.
And I seem to recall that in the early 1990's there were some catty remarks about Hillary's frequently changing hairstyles.
Our politicians are supposed to look good, but we aren't supposed to see how they get they way. It's all the normal looks based prejudice in our society blown out of proportion.
If you are fat - you lack self discipline and self control
Ever changing hair style - you don't know who you are, or aren't comfortable with your identity, ever changing personality
Male manicure - too focused on inconsequential things, not the issues. Or, SISSY.
"Primping" - vain and self-serving

7. How Would You Feel If You Were The Guy Receiving The $400? |
|
Gave up your time, lost business while you accommodated someone else's schedule.

8. Had breakfast with a co-workers yesterday. I mentioned I liked Edwards |
|
and was thinking about supporting him in the next election. One of my right wing co-workers said you know he is gay and spends 400 dollars on haircuts. I said, I know he spent 400 dollars for a haircut, so what! As far as him being gay, his wife and children might have something to say to you about that. Now do you want to discuss about Rudy Giuliani being a cross dresser drag queen?

9. I want to know how much the following people spend on their hair: |
|
1) Dear Leader 2) Shitt Romney (especially him - hair like that doesn't just happen) 3) Giuliani (he barely has any and I'll still bet it's a lot) 4) Glenn Beck (it has a weird, unnatural look to it, no?) 5) Tweety Matthews (let's see how blue-collar he REALLY is - Russert too)
