I saw Obama today in Hanover at Dartmouth. |

My mother would have called this day a "vanilla ice cream day". Beautiful blue sky, wonderful breeze. At least a thousand people, maybe two thousand, lined up to wedge themselves into a small courtyard on the campus for this rally. I was struck by the numbers of very old people on canes and in wheelchairs who came. The kids that were there were a given. He was 2 hours late...a fact of political life with all of these guys that just annoys the hell out of me. But, it was a beautiful day and they had a pretty good band. His wife arrived first with the two little girls. Someone took the girls and she waded into the crowd. She is a very impressive woman! She is just beautiful for starters, graceful, dignified and easy with herself. But what impressed me most is that she stopped to talk to people. She got to me and the friend I was with and she chatted. My friend was from Chicago and they talked about their respective neighborhoods. I said something about her hectic shcedule and she told me that she and the children were heading back to Chicago because she had a parent/teacher breakfast at 7 am tomorrow and she was responsible for bringing the juice.
Then the man himself arrived. He too is attractive, dignified and at ease with himself. He spoke of the sacrifices of our troops and the need to provide for them. He spoke of America's lousy standing in the world and the need to change that. He promised universal health care in his first term. He spoke of ending this war, rebuilding all of America's broken fences and using the misspent dollars to see that every kid got a college education without having to mortgage their future. He spoke of the civil rights movement and how it had allowed him to become what he is today. He talked about being a $12,000 a year community organizer and of going to law school and becomming a constitutional lawyer. He said that change comes from the bottom up. He is a wonderful speaker, he talks of hope and of change and of an America that is a force for good in the world. For w few moments in that brilliant sun in that crowd, I felt that there is a chance to get my country back.
I haven't made my mind up yet about who I will support. I've seen Dodd, Edwards and now, Obama. I will try to see the rest and I will study their proposals carefully because this is the most important election in my lifetime and we've just got to get it right!

1. To thine own self be "easy", Barack |
|
That will be the key to his political career regardless of where it take him. It's when people like him start listening to their "advisers" and "handlers" that they start coming up shaky.

2. The talk of Shrum and his new book clearly shows the wisdom of your words |
|
Shrum being the bad-luck charm of many a would-be Democratic President.
