Ecuador to increase troops on northern border with Colombia

QUITO, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Ecuador announced on Thursday a military reinforcement on the northern border with Colombia to prevent incursions by rebel groups.

Ecuadorian Defense Minister Javier Ponce made the announcement while visiting the Tufino quarters at Tulcan, Carchi province to check the situation of the northern border.

Ponce said the diplomatic ties between Ecuador and Colombia are not in their best situation to coordinate actions, so all moves to retake the national sovereignty will be based on security.

Ecuador broke ties with Colombia on March 3 last year, two days after Colombia bombed a rebel camp located in the Ecuador territory without notifying Ecuador of the operation, a move Quito considered a violation of the Ecuadorian sovereignty.

1. It's ironic, and Ecuador has no choice

Because since the bombing last year, Correa has been demanding that Colombia dispatch troops to its own southern border to prevent FARC and paramilitary groups from infiltrating into Ecuadoran territory.

So far, Uribe has not done anything about it.

2. Actually
it is precisely because the Colombian army has been effective in the border regions that FARC chose to move their camps into Ecuador.

FARC is not exclusively a Colombian problem, but a regional problem. It's about time Correa decided to do something about it.

4. He won't do anything about it. It's too convenience for the poodle
for FARC to cross the border. What irresponsible slime Uribe is.

3. Ecuador to build 'supershield' on Colombia border
Ecuador to build 'supershield' on Colombia border

The Ecuadorean government says it will hurry the purchase of 24 Brazilian and six Israeli military planes and build four new army camps to protect the border with Colombia and prevent the incursion of illegal armed groups.

Ecuador Defense Minister Javier Ponce wants to have the bases built and the airplanes purchased before the end of this year, he said after an inspection of the current border Sunday.

According to Ponce, Ecuador already has increased the number of troops on its northern border and is in the process of buying radar systems to monitor activity in an area that's frequented by both leftist guerrillas and right wing paramilitary groups.

Ecuador has long wanted increased border security after March last year Colombia bombed a FARC camp that was set up on Ecuadorean territory. Colombia accuses Ecuador of harboring leftist rebels, while Ecuador accuses Bogota of not doing enough to stop the incursion of right wing paramilitaries.
